Anyone commuting 27 miles???

Hi everyone! I'm in the process of purchasing a house which will increase my cycling commute from 15 to 27 miles! I've been doing the 30-32 mile round trip consistently now but I have a few concerns; I start work at 5am. I leave at 3:40am and get to work at 4:35am, giving a few minutes for a power nap. Anyhow, the increased new distance will force me to leave home about 3am! Would this give me ample time to be on time? Anyone riding 27 miles to work? Would I be Ok? does anyone ride out at 3am?

You're a yank living in Cal-ee-forn-i-a aren't ya? In that gentle climate it should only take you 45 minutes. Man up.

:rain:lol, it currently takes me 55 minutes to ride in on my cannondale roadbike. I weigh in at 203 pounds and have only been cycling, consistently, for a few months. I'm sure, over time, my speed and endurance will increase. I would just like to knowif anyone out there doing a similar commute. Perhaps I could get feedback on what I should expect, what's and ideal speed and time to ride 27 miles, etc. Yes, you are correct, best weather in the world here in Los Angeles but we still have rain in Febuary and March.

Mort, I agree, 54 miles would just kill me too. I'll cycle in 4 days a week and plan on taking bus back home to nap; I need to have energy left for my kids! I guess my only real concern is weather the 3am departure would take it's toll on my body because I'll be giving up more sleep time.

Yes, uclown, I plan on doing a practice run perhaps next Sunday. I would just like to know some of the experiences of anyone doing a similar commute. Most, if not all, buses have front bike racks that mount 2 bikes maximum.

For a couple of years, my commute was 23 miles each way and up and down a few hills. I could not do it every day, but I could drive on the other days. In the end the long journey just tires you out and fitness just gets to a plateau. My current commute is just 13 miles and takes about 55 mins (in the summer), but last couple of months, there have been more car commutes than bike commutes.

If any of your colleagues live nearby and could take you in one direction could be workable. Also occasionally, I used to drive in the morning with the bike in the back and I would leave the car at work overnight and then cycle in the next day.

With my current commute in the summer and light nights, I sometimes do a slightly longer loop back, pushing it up to about 20 miles.

You intend to ride more than 2 bikes to work each day?

27 miles is going to take around 2hrs so you will be dedicating about 4hrs a day to cycle commuting. IMO I would say that is too much to do everyday. How long is your work day? I do 12hr shifts but if you only do 8hrs it may be more plausible.

Try this ....
Monday morning - drive car in (bike in/on car)
Monday evening - cycle home
Tuesday morning - cycle to work
Tuesday evening - drive home
Wednesday morning - drive to work
Wednesday evening - cycle home
Thursday morning - cycle to work
Thursday evening - drive home
.......
You get the idea ... Might help you cycle commute and not get tired. I used to do 20 miles each way, but got very tired after day 2 as my job involves being active (not a desk job)

Why are you asking on a UK cycling forum about cycling a route that is in California USA that I suspect 99.999999% of us have absolutely no knowledge of? It might be better to ask on a US based forum. Doh!
