A friend has just purchased a 2nd hand road bike and he is suffering from numbness in his hands. He doesn't wear gloves and I think that would help him. So.................
Do the ones with gel work ?
or would the standard type do just as well?
Any one have any advice to offer??

I have a few pairs with gel padding on the palms and find them very comfortable - just make sure it's a half decent make as the cheaper ones don't last/wear very well.
Also, make sure he has his grips adjusted to suit him. That could contribute to his hand numbness!

Yes, it's not necessarily due to not wearing gloves. He's likely taking too much weight on the hands/wrists and/or gripping too tight. I sometimes get tingling or pain in the wrists if I'm resting on the wrong part of the hand.

I suggest experimenting with the bike fit too so that the root cause of the problem is removed not simply masked a bit by palliative measures.

Better riding technique and core strength to ensure their posture is right and not forcing all the weight through the hands will improve things as they get more into it hopefully too.

I used to wear gel gloves but for the last five months I've been wearing a £6 pair of Lidl ski gloves and found them far better than the £35 cycle shop alternatives. I'm not sure what to wear when the weather gets warmer.

What do you mean by "has his grips adjusted to suit him" ??
We both feel the handle bars are too low and he is going to the LBS to find out if they can be raised.............is that what you mean??

No. I actually meant the actual grips that you hold that are attached to the handlebars.....if they aren't adjusted properly it can cause pins and needles and numbness.

Make sure these are adjusted...forward or back....just a few mm's can make the difference!
As for the the handlebar height...that would more likely give him neck or shoulder pain.

The first post says it's a roadbike

Better padded tape could help if problem persists despite correct fit

Also, if bars too low, try flipping stem and rotating bars up slightly?
