It was funny.
The question is, why public space to park a car is readily given, but taking up public space to store your wood (or my trailer, or somebody's pram) is never considered.
I had to hire a skip recently: by council regulations, it was not allowed to sit where the street is lined with cars every day between 6pm-6am.
Because it would have obstructed the road: for cars it's ok.
This is so true and stupid. I used to have 2 defenders with all the kit, monstrous things to pull even bigger trailers for the developments we used to do. The councils never wanted planning permission, cones or night lights for those. But put a tiny, by comparison, skip there and they'd want all of the afore mentioned rules to be met. That's what happens when Billy the fish fryer and Jenny the baker get put in charge.

The more I consider these , the more I think they are a good idea, but , if some decided to use them as long term storage for their bikes, then problems may arise and vandalism , if that roller shutter was damaged , it could be a problem getting your bike out ,
The railway storage system ive seen in London is a good idea , its a two tier rack system , id say expensive though

probably out cycling
They have them all over Lambeth where I live, I have one right outside my house, but I don't use it.
I have 6 bikes so could technically fill one myself but the limit is apparently 2 bikes per person. Though I've not seen any of them broken into, I'm not convinced they are very secure, they look only marginally harder to get thro than chicken wire, so I would'nt feel confident leaving a nice bike in there.

So for me on balance I'd still rather lug my bikes up and down 3 flights of stairs every time I go out, and sleep soundly knowing my bikes are safe inside. Besides 2 of my bikes are Italian and I simply have'nt got the cajones to tell them they have to sleep outside from now on, I'd wake up to a horses head in the bed or be unceremoniously bucked off into the nearest ditch or something. Jilting one Italian mistress is dangerous, two at once is suicidal ^_^

They're clamouring for them in LBWF, a few have gone in and the council have been deluged with requests from envious residents.

A few years back, I was working at a house and the occupier couldn't drive, but bought a car to sit outside his house so nobody else could park in 'his' space. His son gave it a run round when he visited.
That now is a silly waste of money imo.
Back to the op, I keep my bikes inside. I choose my ground floor flat before I started cycling, for the cat to have easy access lol but it worked out very well for taking my bikes indoors.
I wouldn't keep the carbon roadie I don't own  in such a shelter, but I would use it for the ice bike or a very muddy bike till I get time to clean it.
I don't think those sheds would end up full of expensive bikes easy target for theft, because the pricier ones are much lighter to carry upstairs.
