One tip I was given ages ago for replacing the back wheel with the bike right way up - i.e. you've only got one hand free - was to put the cassette 'into' the loop of the chain and get the chain onto the smallest/next smallest sprocket before trying to local the wheel in the frame. This means that the chain is the right way around the top of the derailleur - I've seen people make a terrible mess with the chain especially if it's come off the front chain rings so is hanging loose.
