Coming home from Plymouth tonight at 18:45 and it`s pi**ing down. I get to a section of path that is cut in half and very wide ( a car could drive along it) , half is pedestrians half for bilkes. Guy ahead jogging down the middle but on bike section:bicycle: , his back to me, no one else on the path, so I can get by no problem although why he wasn`t on the pedestrian section I don`t know. Called out "coming past" just so he knew I was there , went to go past hit leaves and what I can only describe as grease , down I went :cursing: . Rear of the saddle hit me like a sledge hammer in the chest and totally winded me also whacked my left knee which is now swollen. The guy was very concerned that I was o.k . Rear wheel slighly buckled so will have to true it , have not checked the bike yet but ,I hope, looks o.k. So I think my road bike will be a no no in bad weather. Luckily I haven`t compounded any of the injuries I picked up 2 weeks ago when I hit the tarmac hard. Managed to ride home in the heavy downpoor . Cycling is fun...... isn`t it ???????
"Coming home from Plymouth..." Oh wow, where do you live? Sounds like you must live very close to me, unless you like riding through the night! I'm near Totnes, by the way.
"Rear of the saddle hit me like a sledge hammer in the chest...." I'm pretty certain I'm reading this wrong, sounds like you did some strange pirouette thing on your bike?!
Hope those injuries clear up soon!

I once did the same thing, cycling along in November a few years back, and it had rained the night before, leaving a lovely slippery path of leaf mold all over the side of the lane I was cycling on. I rounded a corner, and my bike slid out from underneath me. I went down hard on my right arm, but I was at the top of the hill down to my school so I got back up and cycled the rest of the way on adrenaline. Once I got there, I was taken to the local hospital and given an X-Ray, turns out I had a "green-stick fracture" in my right wrist! Stupid #&^%ing leaf mold!

Hello Seryth , I live on Dartmoor near Yelverton. The bike just slid from under me and I think I came down on the bike with the saddle getting me in the chest right in the sternum , still very sore even now. Already got my little finger in a splint from the last crash , luckily it wasn`t further injured this time.

Neat, you're about 20 miles away straight as the crow flies!
Aah okay, I understand now! Thanks for clearing that up. You'll have to cycle very carefully for a while, otherwise you're just going to turn into one large bruise ;). From Plymouth to yours is pretty far, is that a commute or were you just riding for fun?

Also, have you ever tried any of the tor challenges? Some of those hills on Dartmoor are absolute killers...

I usually cycle to Plymouth or Tavistock 5 times a week , not tried the challenges the hills on the roads I ride are enough. Thing is I was cycling carefully , it was just the dark ,rain and nature all combined to help me exit the bike . Cheers

That is probably why he was'nt jogging on the pedestrian side

The pedestrian side is next to the road and clear of leaves etc , safer for him to be there really and if he had been I wouldn`t have ended up on the deck because where I was riding wasn`t near the edge where the leaf crap was. However , I suppose i`ve learnt a (painful ) lesson . Cheers

that and the fact that there is no pedestrian side; they're entitled to use the whole path. We cyclists however, have to use the bit marked for our use. Which is usually strewn with leaves, glass, hedge cuttings, hedgehogs....and all the rest of nature's booby traps. Which is why I don't use them. Oh.....and in the words of Father Dougal McGuire....."Careful now"

Hope the injuries heal soon and you're back on the road.
Be aware that you may have some bruises that might not show up immediately. I was gently persuaded to slide down the road by a driver towing a caravan while I was on the bike leg of the Dawlish triathlon recently and discovered a bruise on my right bicep, 2 on my right leg 1 under my right pec and a pulled muscle in my left shoulder that didn't show until 3 days after the crash and that was apart from the skin that was missing.

Where is the path? I live in Roborough, so on your way home.

Nice to know there's a few South-Westies round here!
@Martinm that sounds nasty O.o how did you do in the triathlon after that, or did you withdraw? I reckon I would've done!

I`m one big bruise at the moment ! It`s the main foot/cycle path along the road at Tesco .I was on the pink cycle bit which as you can see is near the hedges etc. But I only went near the hedge to get past the jogger.

I come that way every morning, the worst culprits for throwing diesel around are bloody school buses, I`ve complained to the relevant companies about it, they aren`t interested it`s really annoying:cursing:

Still, on the bright side, flying past all the tin shoe box loving muppets that love their cars really makes my day, BUT, Tesco`s roundabout - 3 lanes into one?? wtf is that all about?!!!
