lyric? probably. Literature never.

and the only decent dylan songs as many have mentioned are those that have been interpreted by others.

if he'd won the mercury prize or even the MOBO it would have had more credibility, but the Nobel prize for literature?
Do you consider poetry to be literature?

I'm a big Dylan fan. He wrote some great pop songs. I like his lyrics and I like the way he performs them.

I find the standard can't sing/can't play line tedious - the kind of guff you'd expect from any pub bore/Jeremy Clarkson - and the argument about whether or not pop songs can be considered literature is up there with the argument about whether equestrianism deserves to be in the Olympics for sheer fascination value.

Poetry is the art of stating big ideas in few words, using original forms of expression. There is little poetry to be found in internet forums.

How did horses get into this?

You know how every time the Olympics comes around, people are always discussing which sports should and shouldn't be included (equestrianism being the prime talking point), and it's really very boring - no one ever has anything original or interesting to say on the matter, and none of it is important anyway.

Well, whether or not Bob Dylan's work should be regarded as Literature is basically the same discussion, only the terms have changed. And it's equally tedious. I'm not referring just to this thread but to the way the subject is being discussed in the wider world. Although there have been a few fairly perceptive and interesting comments in this thread, so maybe I'm being unfair.

For what it's worth, I think Dylan's lyrics are great in their capacity as lyrics of pop songs, which is all I've ever really considered them as – @dellzeqq is broadly right, though I think dismissing them as doggerel is a bit harsh.

To be honest, I've never paid much attention to the Nobel Prize for Literature in the past and I'm not about to start now just because they've awarded the prize to someone I like.
