Don't get me wrong - I love the songs, but they're really not a lot more than mawkish doggerel. Great mawkish doggerel, but, still and all..........

I invite you to recite 'Lay Lady Lay' without having to curl your toes.

Exactly. They work as songs. And I love 'Lay Lady Lay' as a song, but I wouldn't call the lyrics great (or even good) literature.

This'll do fine.
Particularly good when singing with Iris DeMent.

Iris Dement is worse than Joan bloody Baez, screecher!!!

Personally... i just don't 'get' Dylan. I've tried but he's a terrible singer (IMO), a very average guitar player (but a million times better than me) and his poetry doesn't do it for me either (I prefer Roy Harper, Ian Anderson, Hal David, Paul Simon, Ian Dury, Jarvis Cocker and many more songsmiths). I like a handful of Dylan songs but generally consider him to be highly over-rated. BUT... i love lyrics more than i do poetry, fiction or non-fiction, so I'm very happy that the Nobel prize for literature has gone to a lyricist :bravo:
For a fantastic lyricist (and stunning guitar player) check this guy out. Often described as Scotlands 'Bob Dylan' It's a shame he's not still with us.

Seriously though do you not at least acknowledge that he might have strung a few words together into something remotely resembling a half decent lyric?

lyric? probably. Literature never.

and the only decent dylan songs as many have mentioned are those that have been interpreted by others.

if he'd won the mercury prize or even the MOBO it would have had more credibility, but the Nobel prize for literature?

Oh well, I'm pleased for him, but I'm more pleased you're not on their committee.
