+1 on change the stem, as for 'North Road' handlebars you can get em pretty comfy,

Or for a lower position these 'Toulouse' ones are equally able to get wrist angle comfortable (but with less 'rise')

Ah, OK. That's a tad complicated for my liking. Some forums just allow you to input text in a separate window when pasting a link. This place seems incredibly awkward at times.
Nay, just @User being complicated ^_^

I was about to buy the On-One Mary. They seem to be the right thing and at a good price, however, prices start at €27.49. That's for a white bar. When I select black the price jumps to €44.51! That's outrageous in my opinion. So I won't be buying those.

Nice one, I hadn't noticed those. They're maybe a bit too wide though, not sure. I'll need to get out my measuring tape.

Well they're longer than my bars by a mile but I could live with that. Unfortunately though the 'grip area' is only 170mm. I'm not sure what On-One mean when they refer to 'grip area'. I'd assume it also means the brake lever too but maybe not. I have a Nexus shifter & the length of the grip plus brake lever is 190mm so it won't work. Back to the drawing board.

I've also discovered that the Soma Clarence I linked in the OP has a very long taper down from the central 31.8mm making it unsuitable for the Nexus shifter too.

Why is this proving so difficult?

What was the accident and what career did it end? Just being nosey.

It wasn't much really. I was carrying a radiator at work, something I did for a living so it was normal. Somehow I twisted the wrong way & ended up on my back with the rad on top of me. I managed to slip 3 disks in my lower back. I was off work for 4 months but I ended my 'career' myself. Prior to my going off sick with my genuine injury we had a long running debacle with one of our drivers who not only claimed he'd twisted his knee at work but was sueing the company because he hadn't been adequately taught how to use cling film. Yup, not kidding. I was working with him at the time and nothing happened, he just didn't show for work the next. Nor any of the next 9 months. He was regularly seen in the pub though, no problems there.

Anyway, there was a sense that I was also at it. At least that's how my line manager saw it. Not that I tried to claim anything, not my style. It was my own fault. So I quit. Best thing I ever did because I had time to find work that I was valued for.

This bike is my 5th with flat bars but my first since the back injury. I never had problems before.
