I'm guessing some people might be getting quite tired of me constantly posting about handlebars & grips/bar-ends etc. Back in 2013 I suffered a very severe back injury. It effectively ended my career & it's been a long road back to health, a road it would seem I'm still on. One constant side effect of the injury to my back was wrist pain, specifically in my left wrist. Now that I have a new bike I'm experiencing the same pain in my right wrist as well. Something's got to change.

The stock grips that came with my Cube Hyde Pro are ergonomic in shape but I'm not sold on the idea to be honest. I still get pretty severe wrist pain & I'm inclined to think it's the straight bars themselves that may be the problem. When I hold a straight bar my wrists are effectively twisted at an un-natural angle. Bar-ends would help I suppose, in as much as they'd provide an alternative hand position, but the underlying problem would still exist when I go for the brakes or gears.

To this end I'm investigating alternative handlebars with more sweep to them. On-One sell their 'Mary' bar with a 21° sweep and Soma make the Clarence with an even greater 40° sweep. At the top of the tree there's the Jones H-Bar. This has a 45° sweep and a rather more convoluted build which would allow a more stretched out 'aero' position if required and provides plenty of space for accessories such as lights' computer, bell etc. The downside with the Jones is the cost - the best I can source it for is €175. I'd love one but that's way too expensive for me.

Does anyone here use any of these bars or have any thoughts on my logic? I don't know for a fact that I'm on the right track but I definitely need to do something. Here's some links to the contenders so far..

As ever, any & all input is most welcome.

What about the (almost) 90degree sweep as seen on many vintage bikes?

I rode a sit-up-and-beg type bike with proper swept bars a few years back and found its position incredibly comfortable.

I think those bars go too far the other way. If you hold your arms out in front of you there's a natural angle to the way your knuckles sit & I suspect that's the natural sweep a bar should have. How to actually measure that is another matter. No idea.

Have you tried clip on tri bars? Takes a lot of weight off your hands.

I thought of those but they're likely to exacerbate the back injury & I don't want to ever go there again.

Here for rides.
I like odd bars. Have used Mary's. Great Bar. Currently using Surly Opens on my Big Dummy. Great Bar. Both give a more upright riding position.

Have you looked at North Road style bars?

I've lost count of how many bars I've looked at (and drank in) but I haven't heard of the Surly's. Unfortunately they only seem to come in a 25.4mm version & my stem is of the 31.8mm variety.

Ah, OK. That's a tad complicated for my liking. Some forums just allow you to input text in a separate window when pasting a link. This place seems incredibly awkward at times.

Type what you want to type then select the text you want in the link....

See it highlighted: click on the one that looks like a paper clip ... 7th one from left

It opens a new box where you type in the url of the link

And it appears.... In this case randomly sending you into the mundane news thread.
