i picked up the xl water proof trousers from aldi but they're too baggy, ill try with trouser clips and see if that helps 9anyone want to swap for large ).

If your local Aldi still has larges in stock they may let you return them/exchange. I've heard their returns policy/service is very good.

Very little left (clothes-wise - plenty of the 'hardware' left) when I went in at about 4pm. Couldn't be there first thing because I am expected to attend a thing called work.

Managed to get a pair of gloves and a merino shirt.
Which store did you go to? My missus picked up the toolkit this morn from Great Barr, i went over this evening and still plenty of clothes left, but the vultures had descended.

Can anyone tell me if the "merino" tops are worth the money.

Not really got any proper base layers and last year just ended up with cotton long sleeved tops which just made me sweat

The Wednesbury one - it's my closest. They had tool kits and just about all of the other hardwear, just very little in the way of clothes. Lots of gloves. Just 2 pairs of medium overtrousers left. No compression underwear at all. A few jackets, but the XL wasn't big enough. No winter cycling shirts, no winter trousers. A few socks, mostly smaller sizes, a few arm / leg warmers.

The Bridgwater store is still full of clothing, The wife went in and spent £75. The winter jacket's are exellent just been out for a spin and they don't let any wind through, the weather is not cold enough for them yet if you are pushing hard, so so hot. The Crane brand seems real good value for money i'm suprised you don't see them much. My bib longs and old winter jacket is 3yrs old and still good, just look's a bit over washed now.

about as bad as the cycling kit from sports direct

Sorry to disagree

I have recently bought from Sports Direct 1......A Helmet (arrived broken)
2 ..........2 bottle cages (thinnest wire and also broken)
3..........padded gloves (eerm where exactly IS this mythical padding?)
4..........'trouser-clips' (HOW can you get this wrong!??)

Never again!

Meanwhile.....I have tested the multiple layered cycling jacket and winter gloves I bought this afternoon at Aldi.
And they are both excellent!
Jacket is well made and really windproof. Gloves fit well and have PADDING and foil layer to retain heat.

I was prepared to be disappointed with some of my mad-cap purchases but regret to say I am actually really impressed at the price.

Tights - snug-comfortable-excitingly well padded!

Yellow waterproof jacket.........yet to be tried in the rain but much better specced than my trusty old 'Ron Hill' yellow jacket.

Waterproof overtousers.....a bit biggy at the ankles but look as though they'll do the bizz.

Wind-proof Winter Jacket.........The Best item!........actually windproof and warm, rode it tonight with a nip in the air - comfortable, light (red 'n black to match the TRiban) what's not to like?

Gloves - A fiver! Light years away from Sports directs £5.00 gloves!

The (partly) 'Merino' jumper.........Georgeous enough for my Wife to be jealous...should have bought 2!

A light set.......front light almost good enough to actually see by. Aluminium/9led......if it lasts a few months I'll be happy at the price. Bracket looks a bit suspect but that remains to be seen.

'Technical' socks...........whatever they might be!

And change from 79 squids. (I've seen Merino Jumpers alone sell for more)

I'm Bargain Mad I tellz yer!!!

Best

I may be shot down in flames over this. You get what you pay for and yes Aldi stuff is cheap but then again it is not very good quality at all, about as bad as the cycling kit from sports direct.

I think its highly likely that your gonna get shot down in flames .. i have some Aldi and Lidl kit that i've used for years and its still going strong .. i also have Endura kit and brand name shirts and there is very little difference in the shirts .. granted the padding in the shorts are'nt as good as the Endura stuff but the cheaper stuff serves it purpose very well

Nah - just beg to differ.
I bought two pairs Crane running longs 4 years ago, still serving me very well for winter rides/commute.
Just bought the padded ones today and looking fwd to many comfy rides.
Their socks are really good/comfy too.
Got some Crane tops too and they are still going well after hundreds of rides each - fare a helluva lot better than the waste of money I had on Gore bike wear.

plenty of stuff in Macclesfield even at 2000. didn't see any waterproof trousers, so maybe they had gone. came away with gloves (might go back for more), winter trousers and the reflective spokes, so I'll have both wheels done for when I'm back on the commute...

From the other thread: re. the 'Merino' top - hope you realise its not really a merino top - it's 70% acrylic - I would have thought that in a scrupulously honest world it would be described as an 'Acrylic and Merino' top - anyway I bought another one, not for cycling they are much too big a fit for that*, just everyday wear. Bought one last year - yes - they machine wash fine.
* the womens sizes fit me better than mens, but I think they are indulging in a bit of 'vanity' sizing - I bought a 12-14 and it is much too big to wear as an underlayer, Can't really believe it but a 10-12 would be more of a 'cycling' fit on me - male with 37" chest
- as I say, good everyday top. But not a close, baselayer fit, and no pockets if its meant to be a jersey rather than a baselayer

Went to my local aldi at 10 yesterday morning and got the winter jacket, a jersey and some trousers. All looks decent enough for the price. Oh and the £5 off a £35 spend voucher from yesterday's daily mirror came in handy.
