The Erdinger Alkoholfrei beer is quite pleasant and is 125 cals per 500ml bottle.

IIRC correctly they were giving it free to finishers of RideLondon a few years ago.

I used to drink rum (lots of it). Not only does it have a lot of alcohol, but loads of calories. What was I thinking... xx(
Oh well, that was 8.5 years ago now, and I've been dry since. I understand that some people can drink small amounts and no harm done, but that probably wouldn't work for me, as I never really knew when to stop.

We all know alcohol is very fattening, but is alcohol free beer also fattening? Decided to lose a bit of weight by cutting out the daily couple of pints, but there's nothing like a cold beer on the odd sunny day we get, hence my question.

"Fattening" is nonsensical when talking about food and drink, it's a fantasy to think any given food or drink is or is not fattening. The amount of fat stored in your body is a function of both what you do and what you eat, *all* of what you do and eat - not one item from the week.

Fattening should be used only to describe a lifestyle.

Healthy, is another question. Two pints a day isn't going to help your health, it does carry sugars which you are unlikely to metabolise if you're sitting about and will get stored as fat, it increases your appetite so you tend to eat more than you would. Also, alcohol is a toxin - your body is concentrating its effort on getting rid of the alcohol and processing the other things as a lesser priority.

Two pints on a Sunday afternoon in the sun, should be fine though

Paulaner do an alkofrei weissbier, which to my mind tastes a million times better than the Erdinger one.

Mikkeller do a 0.3% 'Drink in the sun' which is a light coloured beer (as opposed to Nanny State) and is the best of all the low/non-alcoholic beers I've tried.

If you are worried about calories there is always Sainsbury's Basics bitter, 58cals a can. I resent paying near-full price for alcohol free beer.

Or get a really good beer (my tipple of choice at the moment is London Pride unfiltered) and mix it 50/50 with chilled sparkling water, or soda water if you are out. It is surprisingly pleasant if you don't want to get too pished.

You'll want to look at the sugar content of alcohol free beers, if it's your over all health rather than just alcohol, that's your concern.

Would you expect alcohol free beer to be cheaper than the alcoholic version?

Or do you mean you don't like the fact that you can't get discounted alcohol free beer?

I don't drink alcohol and alcohol free beer is something I only drink occasionally. It's never struck me as expensive, but then a 6 pack might last a few weeks.
Yes, because there is less/no duty to pay and the cost of dealcoholising (is that a word?) the beer is more than covered by selling the alcohol for other applications.

It would be good for publicans too - I was at a pub with friends yesterday and unfortunately had to drive home so only had a couple of pints over the course of the evening because the alcohol free choice was Coke (ugh). If there was a decent alcohol free beer for £2 a pint I'd probably have had a few of those and more food too without being conscious about having to drink my pints slowly.

Some of course would have less discipline and end up "taking a chance" driving home.
