An update, tried switching off and on again - twice - no luck.

Taken out and put back in the card.

Also gone into "Services" and System health check, then it asks for my id, which I assume is the last four digits on the card. It does not recognise this number.

When it says on the screen something like "there is a problem" it also shows the number 29. Is this like a fault code? or a diagnostic code?

Rolling Thunder, does that mean I can buy a new Skyplus box on line, receive it by Parcel service, and change over the box myself?

Thank you for that link as it explains the options.

Time to ring Sky me thinks! They should be able to talk you through a fix or tell you if it's beyond repair.

You mean that I shouldn't have taken it apart and re-aligned flange B with sprocket A, while ensuring that the prostatic lineator was relative to the cant when a dog barked in the night.:wacko:

Oh dear, I thought you guys would be able to tell me how to "Fly by Wire" and fix it.;):laugh:

Thank you all anyway for your help.

Our standard Sky box died a couple of months ago. Rang tech support and basically tried it on. They wanted £100 quid to investigate/repair; we said in that case we would cancel and switch to Freeview. Short conversation later we got a service visit and upgrade to a Sky+ box for sod all.

If you threaten them with removing the service it's amazing how cooperative they can become.

Having said that - once you have a Sky+ bos you'll wonder how you ever managed to watch TV before.... Adverts... Pah. I spit upon you as I fast forward

There is a banner at the top of the page that says it includes free set-up, however I'm not sure if that is only for new customers. You'd have to ring sky and find out. Otherwise standard set-up for existing customers is £60.

If you do have to, changing the box yourself shouldn't be a hassle. The Sky+ box has all the same cables and connections as the ordinary Sky box.

if you know a local Sky installer engineer they will sell you a refurbed Sky+ unit out the back of their van and will install it and upgrade your dish receiver etc for a very reasonable sum

I used the local Sky engineer person, very nice person.

The bad news:

He looked closely at the dish and the lnb (low noise box) and the bracket that the signal receiver it is attached to. Also checked the signal going into the socket in the lounge.

He decided that the bracket had been (accidentally damaged) and that the wrong bracket had been fitted in the first place. The receiver was no longer picking up a signal because the recent strong winds had blown it out of place, and that my set top box was out of warranty. The set top box had burnt out through trying to reduce 12,000 mgHz down to approx 3,000.

They replaced the bracket, and the low noise box and installed a reconditioned set top box, and set it up. How much do you think I was charged for this?

£65 which includes the call out fee.

The good news, the obscure channels that I used to watch, including a channel from Brazil, whose signal had been "lost" is now back.

I would like to thank the people who offered advice. One of the first questions I was asked was "Have you switched it off, then switched it back on again." I told him yes, I had, and that I had also done a signal test, and tried to do a system test, but that my pin code was not being accepted.

Programmes in Portuguese.

I have always wanted to visit South America, and thought last year that I might go to Brazil, but did not, it is a long story.

So the next nearest thing is to watch the programmes, to see something of the towns, music etc. It is interesting, even tho I do not understand a word.

Portuguese, when written down, looks a bit like Spanish, but when spoken it sounds like Russian. Tried to learn it once, and failed.
