Advice Needed - My crank is clicking

Hi all i hope someone can give me some quick advice.

I have a Giant SCR 2, its done nearly 1000 miles and the crank or bottom bracket is clicking when I put any power through it. It is not clicking when I am peddling normally but them minute I climb a hill it goes and I can feel it.

Can anyone advise what the best course of action is? and can I keep riding on it as I want to go out tomorrow

Now i am not very technical with bikes but I do know that the bottom bracket on most bikes are sealed so its a case of a replacement is needed and if so what do I get and how much?. Or could it be a worn bearing or just dirt and a clean is what is needed, and if this is the case how do it do it?

Many thanks to anyone with any suggestions

Sure it's not a pedal?

This type of noise can be a nightmare to identify. Anything from pedal to cleat to crank to chainring bolt to...

Similar thing on my Hybrid has been bugging me for months!

Pretty sure its not the pedal or cleat. I can feel the click and its not a small click when I put the power down. Its almost certainly from the crank/bottem bracket area

If it's a pedal bearing, I can guarantee you won't be able to tell it from the BB or anything else - been there, done that!

I'd try another set of pedals just to be sure, before you start spending on BBs etc! That way, you can at least eliminate the cheap (depending on your pedals) solution first.

I too have a SCR 2 (2007) and after about 2000 miles I experienced a similar noise to you. I got all my coaches and team mates to have a listen to it and they all straight away said new BB. My Dad did some research when he was bored and found that Giant BB's are notoriously bad for failure, and that you should replace it asap. Unfortunately we couldn't get it to the bike shop for about a week, so I kept riding it, and it did no problems what so ever - however I didn't honk it up any hills out of the saddle. So basically in my eyes: It will be fine to ride on tomorrow just stay in the saddle, but get it replaced as soon as possible.

Hope this helps!

Im experiencing a similar issue on my boardman comp, sounding like from the pedal, crank, dérailleur going to have to pinpoint it soon as not only is it annoying I don't want it to turn into a costly affair.

As everyone else said, try alternative pedals. Sounds like BB though.

yep gonna switch the pedals tomorrow. How much is a BB and are they easy to fit?

I find my BB/chainset starts clicking between a couple hundred and a thousand miles, I don't quite know what causes it but I take it apart, clean, re grease and it's fine again.

What BB have you got, is it like the one where it is 2 cups and the chainset has the actual axle on? (Holowtech 2)

I have a Giant and it turned out the there was a crack on the inside of the casing where the crankset fixes to the BB - new Crank and BB (they changed it anyway) were covered by warranty.

I think mine cracked due to the huge force my legs exert!
LBS said it was more than likely manufacturing error.

Thanks, had a thought. I bought the bike under a year ago. Do you think the bike shop should deal with this as its within a year of purchase or will they refer me to Giant ?
