£1200 for an IWC gold pocket watch is a bargain, but get it checked out first, make sure it is genuine and it works

Then I'd have to buy a gold chain for it and most likely a 14 karat one to match the 14 karat gold colour. 🤔

It’s likely to be mineral glass given the age. It’s a hard form of glass which is scratch resistant but can be prone to shattering if dropped. It’s usual for broken glass to be replaced by acrylic. They sound different when tapped so you can tell the difference and determine if the original glass has been replaced.

A bloke brought this in the shop I work in today. It's 14 karat gold and was made by the International Watch Company in 1920, according to the owner. He said it's for sale, but wouldn't name a price. He said "make me an offer". That's why I'm asking on here. How much is it worth and what should I offer? 🤔

Wow, that's *banging*

As Gunk says, into four figures. If the movement and dial were toast, then the minimum would be the melt value of the case - horrible to say that, I know, but it's often the fate of gold watches. If it's in good order, then could even be double that. I'm not au-fait with pocket watches, but IWC are a bloody good maker of watches.

It works. He was in the shop for over an hour. He set the time on the hour and an hour later it was exactly the same as my phone's clock. As for it being genuine, I wouldn't know where to get it checked. My goldsmith/watch repairs/sales friend maybe? 🤔

Yes the little clock shop on Warner Street near your work

I asked if he'd drop the price as that's how these thing work, as you'll know. He said he's going to put it on the internet for sale next week, but cash in hand he'll take £1100. So I'm going to pick it up tomorrow and to buy a Victorian 9 karat chain for it he has at £400. I'm happy with that! 1500 quid for a watch and chain that shouldn't depreciate in value isn't bad wouldn't you say. I can't see one less in cost on fleabay.

I found one earlier that was up for £560 but it was in poor condition. A hairline crack in the dial and glass for starters. It would cost a fair but to get it back to its best so £1,100 sounds a good price for the one you are looking at.

Yes, I saw one on ebay for about £500, but it couldn't be wound up, the case wouldn't close and it was silver not gold. The seller described the watch as 'in need of slight attention'. I bet sorting that can't wind it up' problem is more than slight!

Probably just a new main spring or crown wheel but would need someone competent to sort out. The case not closing would be a greater concern to me.
