A bloke brought this in the shop I work in today. It's 14 karat gold and was made by the International Watch Company in 1920, according to the owner. He said it's for sale, but wouldn't name a price. He said "make me an offer". That's why I'm asking on here. How much is it worth and what should I offer? 🤔

The thing is, with such a watch you couldn't show it off like you could a wrist watch. You'd have to keep pretending you wanted to know the time and keep taking it out of your waistcoat pocket to let others see it!

That one is expensive. Seen them for ~£1,000, sometimes a bit less.
He's just messaged me. He wants £1200 for his. Maybe the condition makes some expensive and some much cheaper if they're 'well worn' looking? 🤔

It’s a starting point from him. The photos aren’t very clear as to condition but it looks reasonably clean. Up to you where you go from there.

Do you think it's worth £1,200. Or should I offer £1000 and then we eventually settle on an £1,100 deal? He said he'd do a swap for an 18 karat gold chain I have, worth about £1,200. It's too 'Mr T' style for me. I never wear it, so at least with a nice pocket watch I'd be able to wear it, with many of my waistcoats!

Have not handled it so can’t comment on value or authenticity.

£1200 for an IWC gold pocket watch is a bargain, but get it checked out first, make sure it is genuine and it works

It works. He was in the shop for over an hour. He set the time on the hour and an hour later it was exactly the same as my phone's clock. As for it being genuine, I wouldn't know where to get it checked. My goldsmith/watch repairs/sales friend maybe? 🤔
