A neighbour's privet from hell....

Tried to uproot a small laburnum tree once by attaching a tow rope to the trunk about 4 feet up and the other end to my Landy. In low box first gear with the centre diff locked the LR just sat there with all four wheels spinning on dry tarmac! A Land Rover is rated to pull a 3.5 ton trailer!

My neighbours have a leylandii tree that borders our garden and its huge... we bought hedge trimmers this year to control our side of it. But what I don't understand is that it shades our garden in the morning when we are less likely to use the garden - and theirs in the afternoon so that its almost entirely in shade - mad.

My neighbour has Leylandii hedging. I have a privet hedge. We keep them under control with regular trimming. I have lovely neighbours. I was trimming my privet hedge the other week and my neighbour's grandson wandered along. "I'll do the top of that for you if you want." And he did. This is the kind of neighbour to have. Having had truly awful neighbours in a place I used to live, I really do appreciate having good neighbours.

Yesterday morning I looked out the back and there was sewerage down next doors drive! Ours had some too but there's was really bad, the drain had backed up in the heavy rain, it was stinking. I just went out and started clearing it up.

Turned out it had washed into the garage, which was a big deal as her daughter was storing brand new furniture in it! So I went and got a van, collected some pallets for the furniture to sit on and we took all of the furniture out of the garage, out of the boxes and washed out the garage. Took all day!

By about 6pm we were done but Alison, our neighbour didn't want to use her shower in case it flooded again so she used ours and stayed for diner. An unusual day but illustrates how we do things. Having also lived where the neighbours were horrible it's fantastic to have such a friendly relaxed atmosphere.

If it's his hedge throw the stuff into his garden that's the legal requirement. Same for tree branches etc. But yes you could try and poison it but it will take a while Jeyes fluid should do the trick

No it isn't. The branches are his property and you should take them round to him and ask if he wants them back. If he says "No" then it is up to you to dispose of them.
You can legally cut back every part of the hedge which is on your land. That includes the roots and if that kills the hedge so be it.

Quite an old thread,but here goes.

Look at this picture of a horrendous privet,taken today! It's actually attached to the old/ex gatehouse of my local cemetery. I've complained to the council about it. So far nothing's been done,but hey ho i complained a mere two months ago which isn't a long time to local authorities! The tenant of the house was sat out sunbathing a few weeks ago during the 'Indian summer'. Why aren't you cutting that damned privet down instead i thought! As you walk past it you're left with about 18 inches of a pavement that must be about 4 to 5 feet wide. It's on a main road where the bus shelter about 100 yards down the road was demolished by a transit van about 5 weeks ago. I feel unsafe as i walk past this way overgrown privet,due to me being about a foot away from speeding traffic. Them there's the concern over a few i know who have to negotiate it on mobility scooters. I bet the council IF they've done anything about it have just sent a nice polite letter asking him to get it cut...in the next two years. If i had my way i'd get a council employee to slice it all off with a hedge trimmer and present the lazy scruffy fecker with a big bill for their service.

It's a bloody disgrace!!!

That picture was not taken today in the North West anywhere. It's bone f'ing dry there with wispy clouds.

I've been out and about in the N West today and it's been hissing it down on and off, so no bone dry stuff to be seen. The sky never looked like that....

I swear on my mutt's life they were taken today at...looks at time of pic' on phone.....14.35. It was mild and sunnyish.

Where about in the north west were you?🤔 Manchester,i'm guessing.
