Yes I can, Yes I am, Yes I did...Repeat.
I doubt I'd even do thta on an MTB let alone a road bike with skinny tyres etc.....I'd likely get off and push and live to ride another day.

Thats on a national cycle route???!!!
Looks nice though.

Yup. I did it when I rode the Pennine cycleway a few years ago - thanks, Sustrans. Just to compound the misery, I was on a sturdy bike loaded with two panniers. Needless to say, I didn't make it to the top.

Col, how does it compare to the cobbled road through Hepptonstall featured in Season of Mists Audax? That hits 25% iirc

Just put a schlumpf mountain drive on my Brompton, gives me a 16" bottom gear.....I may give it a go next week.
The problem is normally having enough rear wheel traction to allow you to shift your weight forwards to keep the front end down. Conditions are currently good though - no ice, dry and most of the moss and leaf mulch seems to have been cleaned up by someone.

If you do decide to have a go, let me know and I'll try and video your attempt!

There's no way that the road through Heptonstall is 25%! Nearly everybody on SoM manages to get up that so I reckon the steepest bit is 'only' about 15% and most of it is more like 10%.

The Buttress is a bit of a killer which is why I haven't tried it (yet). It's one of those climbs that looks just about doable, but you know that the likelihood is that you will have to put a foot down at least once.

You know where you can shove it !?

Looks like fun though ... what's the distance and gradient btw ? Looks so steep that you might risk toppling backwards if you were actually sat on a road bike.

Strava claims 24.2% average gradient.

How accurate that is, I don't know - Never been up there myself, but would love to give it a go on a rigid mountain bike!

Yes - that's the missing remark!

The first bit is very steep - I'd guess 30% or so. Above that it varies but probably 15% - 20% most of the way up to the road above. I reckon the length of the climb is only about 300 m but it feels like a lot more!

I'll walk up it with my GPS tomorrow and see what data that comes up with.

I've got an adjustable square somewhere and a spirit level. If I can find them, I'll measure the gradient at various points on the climb.
