The Phaart imitations of Cateye TL610s at On-One are very good for £1.99 a go. I have a couple on different commuters. Up front I do have a Phaart Aeron which is fine for on road commuting and used most of the time I'm not on the bike with a dynamo (streets aren't lit on most of my commute), but of off roading I use a Surefire Cree torch.

I have two PHAART red mist from planet X on the back of my bike and for under £3.00 each I can't fault them. I also have some cree torch like lights on the front off eBay, they cost about £12 with a free back light that now sits on my work bag.

Oh no they're not........

Oh yes they are^_^

Seriously, I bought both types a couple of months ago in a JE James sale. They are equal as far as I can tell in terms of brightness. The one advantage of the Smart is that it has a setting that lets you use one of the two bulbs if required. And actually, the bracket on the Claude Butler is a bit more malleable (more of a strap type clamp).

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind my asking. What batteries do they use and can each led have a different mode, eg one flashing the other steady?

They use 2 x AAA. They have 3 modes. One steady and 2 flashing.

You have to be a little carefully opening the carcass to replace batteries as the fitting is a bit tight (I chipped a bit out of the side of one of the 2 I bought-not affected the light in any way though).

Always best to put a bit of grease around the seal on rear lights, especially if you dont have guards on the bike and the light is mounted on the seatpost, as it will receive a constant spray of water which will test the water resistance of even the most expensive of rear lights.

Cheers. I ended up going for a Lezyne Femto set. The front will be back up if my main light fails and I'll use the rear in tandem with a little Lifeline light I bought from Wiggle.
