I've just ridden 10 .5 miles (in the cold and dark on a heavy bike) and when I got home I was definitely on the slow witted side as my brother told me a joke I didn't understand at first and I filled a kettle for tea, plugged it in and walked away without switching it on. Is this a normal reaction to exercise?
 
Don't worry this can be normal. On sunday I went out on my MTB, I am used to road bikes but the weather was crappy but needed to get out. I live at the top of a very steep hill. The whole ride was fine until the hill, I made it up and back to the house, but I was not with it for about 30 mins. I think I was just exhausted, my heart rate must have been well above my max. This sends most of the blood in your body to the muscles that need it and not to your brain so you can feel a bit dizzy for a while.

Your max heart rate is roughly your 220 minus your age, that would make mine 180. If I overdo things my heart rate can go up to 200. Not good, I know, but every so often I push myself too hard.

I wouldn't worry - I'm like that before I go out.

Your max heart rate is roughly your 220 minus your age, that would make mine 180. If I overdo things my heart rate can go up to 200. Not good, I know, but every so often I push myself too hard.

it's not 'roughly' anything of the sort. By definition, it is not possible to exceed your maximum HR. If you thought that 180 was your max HR and you already know that you have hit 200, then it is quite obvious that 180 is not your max.

That makes things very clear, you have absolutely no idea of your max HR!

I can assure you, you are not exceeding your max HR. This is fundamentally impossible.

Thought you might put your oar in. As a qualified personal trainer a max heart rate is called as such so that you will not put overdue stress on your heart and body. It does not mean the maximum that your heart will go to, as this can vary day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute........................:headshake:

Well, as a 'qualified personal trainer', you really ought to know better. Mate you are talking utter nonsense. Your maximum heart rate is the fastest rate at which your heart can beat. Just google it - it will save us all a lot of time. Qualified, my ar5e....
 
I am not your mate and you are talking rubbish. Do you not know the difference between actual max. heart rate and theoretical max heart rate. Depends a lot on your fitness. Go back to school. Maybe your ar5e is qualified but your head is not.

Well, let's see. In your case, your 'theoretical' MHR (ie, the incorrect one) appears to be 180 and your 'actual' MHR appears to be at least 200. Not much point setting your training zones using 180 as your MHR, if your true MHR is 20 beats higher, is there..?

LMFAO, are you for real? A max HR is the max rate with which your heart will pump, it is not some artificial construct created to save you from over stressing your body, that is a crock of shoot and if that is what the qualifying bodies that hand out personal training qualifications teach, it is no wonder the vast majority of them are numpties who haven't a clue!
