For the sake of 2.9 miles I'd have put the gadget back in my pocket and done a few laps of the town/ village!!

My first 100 this year, I knew about 10 miles from home that i was going to be short, so picked up one of my other cycling routes and brought it nicely to 103, job done.

I have got one on my phone (sports tracker) but it is kept in my bumbag and it is a pain to get out. So I only checked it when I got home.

I was thinking of doing that, but it felt like cheating and did not seem conceptually right.

So, in future, get it out and check just before you get home.

I don't see why going back out would be cheating. I did 85 yesterday, in that time I had one stop sitting on a bench in a park eating lunch, and numerous little stops for the loo or a swig of water and a snack, and last week I did 50 with two proper cafe stops. It's still one ride. If you got in, saw the distance, then got back out straight away, it's only like having a short cafe stop - in fact, one without tea and cake! There's certainly nothing wrong with doing laps to make up the distance, I had to do that to make my century.

So unless you are determined to do 100 non-stop, I don't think it matters. I reckon the clock is reset when you have a proper overnight sleep.

Well done anyway!

Well done. Did my first couple of 100s this year too.

My only question is - where did you find a "hill" in Lincolnshire, the whole place is as flat as a 3 day old fart

You've never been to Lincoln, I guess...

Not in the wolds in aint. There are some very steep hills. I will conceed that they aren't the long though. Check these out:-

Bully hill (just north-east of Tealby), Walesby hill (north of Walesby), Normanby-by-spital hill (north of Normandby-by-spital) and Tetford hill (the one I walked up - north of Tetford):-

So there

And the one north of that at Ruckland. Nice long fast run down the hill to it, then the road bends round at the bottom to take all the speed off and you have to haul yourself up the other side. I didn't get off but I was weaving across the wet road trying to get purchase on my tyres and got my heart rate up to near its max at 200!

The imaginatively named Steep Hill gives the game away - and cobbled too - ouch!

I was once in a shop on that hill, and a rhino ran past. Yes, a rhino. You know there's a couple of blokes run the London Marathon in a Rhino costume? It was one of them....

'Tis wild country is Lincolnshire. Many of the quiet lanes are haunted by the figure of a ferocious black dog, all a-drippin' and a-slaverin' from a gob full of yellow, razor sharp teeth. Aye 'tis said that if you see it, you ain't long for this world......oh yes...'tis said alright.

Only a couple of weeks back, as my mate was drivin' back from the local house of refreshement (having imbibed only orange juice, of course), he looked in his rear view mirror and saw that most hideous of sights, that dark hairy form with teeth all protruding in a menacing snarl, lips drooling and quivering...

Then he realised he'd picked up his mother-in-law!!!

I joined the 100 mile club 41 years ago, and last did one 22 years ago. Do I still count as a club member??

Now with the inherited version of type 2 diabetes which restricts my ability to safely use most high energy foods and supplements, and veteran of a heart attack, which keeps my maximum power output below its former level, I'm determined to renew my membership before I'm 60 (in 2 3/4 years time).

Am I completely barmy?

If I can find someone to do it with I'm thinking of doing the LEJOG as a 60th celebration, including some 100+ days. Am I absolutely insane?

Gerry are you feeling ok old chap? I think you need to take more water with it. The only dogs I have seen are the sort that bark pointlessly at you as you cycle past the farm. Some of them actually have four legs ....

managed first and only 100 miler this year and learnt a lot, must drink more liquid, dont eat a pastie for lunch!,use suncream, next time choose a route where the biggest hills are not at the end,or the middle ,or the beginning, managed 11mph,Dartmoor hills are very unforgiving.

Can I be forgiven the 2.9 miles? 97.1 is not 100 so short answer, NO!
Or will I have to do it again? What for? If you do it again you might aswell go the extra 2.9 miles.
I suppose next time it will be easier. If the weather is sunny, temps at 18 degrees, and low wind speed then possibly yes. If the weather is rainy, windy and cold, and you are hungover when you go for it again then no. Best of luck anyway:smile:

100 milers are addictive.

Done my third last weekend and got my 4th this weekend. The thing I find is that once you hit the 100 mile mark psycholigically it gets easier to go even further. I found doing a 200km audax no more difficult than doing 100 miles, despite having to go 30 miles further.

Last weekend my 110 miles were done at night though, now that is an experience! This weekend should be easier, doing 120 miles in daylight, but will have to tackle the Gospel Pass. Now that's a hill.

BTW I noticed you said you did 1000ft of climbing in 97 miles. REALLY?! My flat 30 mile training route includes 1600ft of climbing! I can kind of understand it, my works HQ is just south of Lincoln and whenever I visit I always think how boring it must be to cycle in Lincolnshire.
