You was feeling sick rather than hungry, right?
Tired, weak and fatigued?
Yep that is that exact symptoms. I have a headache too.
I don't feel hungry today either.

I weighed myself when I got in and I had lost 8 pounds!
I assume that most of that was in fluids?
Although saying that I look a lot leaner and my belt feels very slack this morning.

That explanation of Ketosis is a bit scary. So my body is basically eating itself? ;) It says I could potentially damage my liver and kidneys. Surely not from just doing exercise. I thought exercise was good for you. Have I damaged myself then? Maybe next time I will take some jelly babies with me as they are very good for energy.

Just as an aside, how many calories would I have burned?
Almost 14mph average, 100 miles, approx 7 hours ride time.
Approx 1000ft of height gain. I weigh about 12.5 stone.

Yup, headache is part of it.

No you haven't damaged yourself.
Chaps have spend a week in the desert without long lasting effects, eating nothing but grubs and insects.

If it were me on my Dawes Giro 500 in yesterdays weather, I would have burned 6000 kcals for the trip.
I would have eaten 2600 kCals for it and drank 4 litres of water.

I would have done 100 miles at about 13 mph. I would have said goodbye to 1lb of fat by eating 1600 kCals the night before and eating the 1000 kCals little and often.

Well done. Did my first couple of 100s this year too.

My only question is - where did you find a "hill" in Lincolnshire, the whole place is as flat as a 3 day old fart ;)

IIRC Whilst the muscles and many parts of the body can utilise fat as an energy source, the brain cannot. The brain is a very power-hungry organ that runs primarily on glycogen/glucose. Whilst it can't use fats it can use ketones and that's a large part of why they're produced when temporarily glycogen depleted.

In terms of energy used, I'd reckon something around 400 ish cals per hour as a rough estimate. Jim'll give you a calc soon!

You may not have damaged yourself but it does show up that your body has not yet adapted to longer stints of effort.

the body is quite happy to go into starvation mode if you do allow it to...

I recommend that you use a carohydrate drink with salts to prevent tiredness and cramp. SIS works for me; used it on my first 100 recently and I doubled the dosage after the half way mark. Consequently I felt better and better as the ride progressed with none of the cramp I used to suffer on long rides.

The TOTAL for me comes to 60 kCals/mile.

Since I want to lose fat AND survive the ride in good shape to ride to work the next day, I do some personal specific calculations to arrive at a feeding stategy for ME.

For the newbie who is on his/her first 100 miler, I would suggest eating the whole 6000 kCals and drinking 4+ litres of water.
See how you do as fat% and bathroom scales are concerned and as you repeat the 100 mile or 200 km rides, cut back your intake if the 6000 kCals results in a fat% gain.

After ten or so 200 km Randos, you should have YOUR kCals requirement sussed.

Come on its not that bad!

OK it doesn't compare to the Dales ... but I always say, everywhere seems a lot less flat on a bike. The ridge between Grantham and Lincoln bisects a lot of my routes, and provides a good few challenges. Also, although I haven't cycled in the Wolds, I have driven there and I reckon it is ideal cycling country, enough undulations to keep it interesting without wearing you out.

100 miles (or nearly) is excellent btw. I am hoping to crack 75 miles by cycling to Skegness this weekend if the weather is half decent.

Cheers Tim

The Vikings sailed the Atlantic on a diet of salted pork, fish, seal and whale blubber.
They also took some HEAVY oatmeal biscuits, but only ate these to about 200 kCals per day.
Strangely, that's the 50g per day Old Atkins suggested!

Eskimo Indians lived on the permafrost for half the year without eating any fruit or veg or grain produce. Their diet was mainly whale, seal and caribou.
The only developed obesity when McDonalds opened a branch.

Not in the wolds in aint. There are some very steep hills. I will conceed that they aren't the long though. Check these out:-

Bully hill (just north-east of Tealby), Walesby hill (north of Walesby), Normanby-by-spital hill (north of Normandby-by-spital) and Tetford hill (the one I walked up - north of Tetford):-

So there

Congratulations!. Could I suggest a product for you to use on the longer rides, it is called Energy Boost by NutriSport, its only £20 for 5KG of the stuff. Its a Maltodextrin based product so it has slower energy release, and does not give you a massive sugar rush on use. Its cheap, it tastes nice and its cheap . I use it on long rides, in the gym(also have similar product called energy boost 4:1 which also has protien) etc...
