I'm not sure it will. Triples give a different sort of ranges and a triple with a smaller cassette gives closer changes than a compact.

There's also the touring market where a very wide spread of gears is preferable (my tourer has a 22t inner ring and a 32t largest cog)

What does the mech look like when you engage bottom gear though (largest cog)?

Oof! As long as it doesn't lock up in an accidental wrong gear shift, that'll do ;)

But 34x32 eh, that's some towing gear. You could bolt a caravan on there and not be bothered by it.

That is / was a worry but so far so good. I am not sure if i will stick with it, may fit a 11-30 but i will see. Hope to get out at the weekend for a test and to hit a local 25% hill.

Taking it around the block seems ok, and even going big / big & small / small worked although as i say i would not do that normally anyway.

The position on big / big is not that far from what it was on 12-27 but ive added links to the chain so by my calc is should sit at the same angle anyway.

There are quite a few posts on other forums regarding Ultegra 50/34 with 11-32 cassette and it would seem that the crucial thing is the chain length.

I used an old chain and quicklinks to get the right length, then fitted a new chain cut to the length. 1 link to little and 1 link to much and the whole thing didnt work.

I have 28 front and 32 rear on my hybrid.Even with full panniers I can wind it up any hill that I can keep the front wheel down on.(Theres a couple of local hills where an accidental wheelie is very possible :-) )

If you live in a hilly area 34 front 32 rear will be a god send on steep hill/ tired legs.

I would like an 11-30 but they are not as good as a 11-32.

I live on the edge of the Blackdown hills so have a few big climbs around me. If i am out for the day it can start to get a bit painfull on the knees with a 12-27.

There's usually only 2 links or so leeway anyway so that's nothing to worry about. How slack the chain hangs on smaller cogs is the biggest concern I'd say, check all the gears for ones that slap about too much and steer well clear.

I'm surprised that new chains come long enough ;)

Small /small is just about ok but is really pushing it so i will stay clear of the small / 2 smallest.

That said i would love to see a Spesh Roubaix 9 speed sora setup as its the same 50/34 with 11-32.

chain is 110 links + Quicklink.

Last time I fitted a 32t cassette on my defy I used a shimano XT derailleur!

I've settled for 28T cassettes since, but it was nice spinning up 20% hills. While big/big is not really a good idea, sometimes it does happen inadvertently, so I like to make sure every gear combination is possible, so the worst that happens is a bit of extra wear and tear when using bad gear combinations rather than catastrophic failure.

2012 defy 2 has 12-30 tiagra 10 speed which for me is the ideal gearing.

On my setup it will do big big (subject to being given some abuse at the weekend) so hopefully all will be ok.
