I have noticed how much lower my terminal velocity is since losing over 4 stone in weight. I chased @nickyboy down off Holme Moss a few weeks back and couldn't keep up with him because I am now 2 stone lighter than him. If I had still been 2 stone heavier than him, he would have been chasing me instead!

Chase him uphill and turn the tables on him.
In the past I cycled with someone who was quite big. I couldnt live with him on the downhills, but on the uphills he was so far back he was nowhere to be seen.

He is fitter than me so he beat me on the climb up the other side of Holme Moss! (And he was carrying my rucksack for me ...)

I have a 50/11. At the time I have no idea if I was actually in the top gear or the one below it. It most likely was top gear tho. The 18% hill is the steepest hill I have ever cycled on and I have never cycled up it.
Its also the only place I managed 50mph. At 7.5% I would be pleased to hit between 35 and 40mph. Im a lightweight so gravity doesnt have as much of an effect. This is my advantage when pointing up.

With 50/11 pedalling at 120rpm you'll be doing "only" 43mph. I don't know about you, but I can't get any worthwhile power down at over 120rpm: so once you're going at those sorts of speeds, forget about pedalling and tuck in.

I don't even bother with an 11t any more. I prefer having the extra ratio in the middle of my cassette offered by 25-12 over 25-11. 50/12 @ 120rpm is 39mph, at which point I am happy just to tuck in and cling on.

I went for a ride with a larger chap the other day, I was way, way quicker up the hills couldn't quite match him going down though.
