Sold which bike? The one I did the calcs for I rode this morning.

52t? That's middle ring territory. I run 33/48/70 with an 11-30 cassette on a 559x28 or 622x20 rear tyre depending on my mood... that's 100km/h or 107km/h at 135rpm in top gear (my maximum sustained speed rpm)... oh sorry you're on one of these inefficient up-wrong contraptions

I don't know which bike - I didn't know you had more than one. I presumne you sold the one you were peddling? Or were there no buyers?

You're all mad! My brain forces my hands to pull the brakes at anything over 40 and even some over 30:blush:. Interesting replies though as to why
Managed 55mph, fast enough to set the speed cameras off coming down from J24(M62) into Elland, on four wheels. Pedalling was pointless.

The only speed triggered things I'll set off are the ones set to 30 on a downhill section! I know I couldn't get anywhere like 55, my brain just stars talking about all the potential things that could go wrong. And I seem to have been worse this year.

i don't know how anybody can get near those kind of speeds on a bike.

my common sense kicked in at 30mph the other week on my first proper down hill section of road, covering the brake getting ready for the unexpected, sitting up right as much as i could to get max wind resistance to slow me down a little,

 ive turned into such a pussy since i stopped riding motorcycles, lol.

Oh, and always remember not to grab the front brake lever too hard when slowing from such speeds ... you get this strange feeling at the back of the bike, followed a microsecond later by complete terror as you realise your back wheel is no longer in contact with the ground and is rising up to meet you - LET GO!! LET GO!!!!!!

Nope - cos you're aware that this is likely to happen, and have
a) braced your feet against the pedals properly and
b) hung your arse out the the back of the saddle so most of your weight is already over the back wheel.
c) Ride a mountain bike - learn how to throw yourself down proper steep stuff.

Still cant trigger the speed camera on the Elland bypass though - 51mph is my limit so far.

Na, you just get used to backing the bike into the corner. It's not like you can throw your weight back on when you're riding in a proper fast bike

I'd say stop Peddling, 50 is plenty!

I agree. On the bike that I dont pedal I once maxed out about 100mph faster than this. Wont happen again tho, just wanted to see what it could do.

Because you are trying to pedal, but you do not have a high enough gear to do it smoothly! In a 53/12 gear you would have to pedalling at about 141 rpm which is a pretty high cadence.

If you are on a very steep downhill, you should be able to hit 50 mph very quickly without pedalling at all, unless there is a headwind. I hit 55 mph on one local descent just freewheeling and that is only about 7.5%.

I have a 50/11. At the time I have no idea if I was actually in the top gear or the one below it. It most likely was top gear tho. The 18% hill is the steepest hill I have ever cycled on and I have never cycled up it.
Its also the only place I managed 50mph. At 7.5% I would be pleased to hit between 35 and 40mph. Im a lightweight so gravity doesnt have as much of an effect. This is my advantage when pointing up.

Have you got your speed magnet on the other side of the wheel to your valve, also by adding another magnet you can double your speed.

I have noticed how much lower my terminal velocity is since losing over 4 stone in weight. I chased @nickyboy down off Holme Moss a few weeks back and couldn't keep up with him because I am now 2 stone lighter than him. If I had still been 2 stone heavier than him, he would have been chasing me instead!
