I travelled light yesterday with no jelly babies...perhaps a mistake! Although toffee crisp bites when flagging are not too bad a substitute ... Thanks @jefmcg ;)

Some of you guys!

For those of us who do several thousand miles a year, a 35 miler could probably be ridden without any food or drink whatsoever and this wouldn't present too much of a problem ( especially in these cold wet conditions!). The body adapts and becomes more efficient.

But that's not the point!

This is the Beginners section. The OP has never ridden anywhere near that distance before, and will therefore require lots of good nutrition and hydration.

After about 60 miles of my first century, I scoffed 6 flapjacks one after t'other at one of the feed stations, despite having just had lunch and having eaten several energy bars before that! Wouldn't need to do that now.

By the way, did you manage to get out, or was it too wet?

Actually, he's previously done 15, 20 & 25 mile rides on a cup of coffee and a breakfast bar.

Can't imagine he'll need much more in the way of nutrition & hydration for another 9.6 miles over his previous best.

My advice would have been take two extra bars, one for the topping up and one more with 5 miles or so to go just to make it that little bit more comfortable. And put an extra 5 psi in the back tyre just to reduce drag or whatever it's called.

I'm sure you'll have done it by now though  ... that Quick did me fine for a couple of 100s and countless 50s on heavier wheels than the ones you got so I hope you enjoyed it!

Lots of different advice here...everybody is different when it comes to how they approach pre ride/ride/post ride nutrition...just do what you normally do and take a few extras as mentioned just in case...on your next distance try a different approach and find what works for you....you'll soon find out what works

Hi all,

I have been doing 15, 20, 25 mile rides both on my own and with sky rides, today I did a loop of 17.3 miles, now my idea for tomorrow is to do this loop twice, making it the biggest mileage I have ever done. When I do the other distances I tend to just have a breakfast bar and a coffee before I leave, what would your recommendations be if I was to double this mileage, regarding food & fluids, I have a 500ml & 750 ml bottle, should I be taking both ...?
I average just over 12mph if this helps, oh and if I x2 the loop 700ft of climbing, but nothing major.

Thanks
Tony.

Did my longest solo on Saturday on a new route.

https://www.strava.com/activities/184115081

Have done a couple of 50s before with others.

This was MY routine for Saturday (not saying this is the only way before someone jumps on what I say), and it was not a tried and tested routine before Saturday but if it hadn't been the need tobe back home for 1pm I feel I could have done at LEAST another 20-25.

Breakfast: Bowl of Muesli and banana

Pre Ride: One sachet of Hi 5 energy drink mixed with 500ml water and one Hi Five Citrus enery gel.

Took 1x500ml and 1x750ml water bottles with Zero tabs in for hydration. Hardly touched them.

20 miles (half way) in stopped for 20 mins for a coffee and a Cadburys Topic at a cafe.

I seriously felt so full of energy and it was the most enjoyable bike ride I have ever been on and as I say felt I could have easily done another 20 miles at least.

I shall use this method on my next 40+ ride which will hopefully be next weekend and then weekend after another charity50 miler.

I've raised this sort if thing on another thread and got shot at. But I agree, it's 35 miles in the UK, it's not the gobi desert.
35 miles shouldn't need more than breakfast and one bottle. If desperate we have shops, cafés and service stations...

"Shot at"!

Over reaction of the century you big girls blouse

Hi all,

Well I went out in the rain and wind, and did one 17mile loop, some of which entails going along a busy 2 laned road, this first pass was not very nice, with the strong wind and HGVs overtaking, so after this I moved onto some more familiar smaller loops on the country lanes, at the 16 mile mark, I stopped here for a comfort break , and took some photos.

After this I continued my loops, until I came to the stage at 28 miles, that the rain was torrential, and I seemed to be riding constantly into a head wind, and my legs decided enoughs enough, so I was 7 miles short , but hey, I will try again, and will no doubt do the 35 miles sooner rather than later. Enjoyed the ride , not many people out and about though, took me 2hr 28 mins., took 2 bars to nibble on , finished my 500ml bottle, and drank half of the 750ml. Thank you all for you replies
Much appreciated,

Tony.

We really are all different, yesterday I had porridge and a mug of tea for breakfast, then a 16oz skinny latte and pain au raisin after about 3 hours, some toffee crisp bites after another 3 hours, then another skinny latte and 3/4 fruit scone about an hour after that. I drank about 750ml water and 500 ml water with a high 5 zero. Had a couple of flat peaches when I got home. I was out from 8.30am to 5 (not a rushed 100km for sure)

By golly, was I ready for my bodeans pig fest platter at 7.30pm :hungry: And for my bed at 11!

Sounds like a good ride all things considered! Weather as grim here this morning too.

Great pics - bike looks like it should be vintage in that setting mind you! lol

Hope you enjoyed overall and well done. I'd bet with better weather and a direct return trip you'd make it for sure.

Mental note to get a bottle thingy for my bike as haven't got one yet.
