Hi all,

I have been doing 15, 20, 25 mile rides both on my own and with sky rides, today I did a loop of 17.3 miles, now my idea for tomorrow is to do this loop twice, making it the biggest mileage I have ever done. When I do the other distances I tend to just have a breakfast bar and a coffee before I leave, what would your recommendations be if I was to double this mileage, regarding food & fluids, I have a 500ml & 750 ml bottle, should I be taking both ...?
I average just over 12mph if this helps, oh and if I x2 the loop 700ft of climbing, but nothing major.

Thanks
Tony.

I achieved my longest ride yesterday 33 miles and think that plenty of fluids and some flapjack which i had for the first time yesterday done the trick for me. Good luck and let us know how you got on.

If there is no chance of a refill yes take both bottles- and drink them, that's nearly 3 hours of riding at that speed.
Food wise a cereal bar or two, and maybe some jelly babies will see you through easily.
If I was you I'd do the circuit and then do it backwards so avoid seeing the same scenes in the same order twice.

Eat lots of carbs the night before. You'll need to get the glycogen in your muscles topped up for a 3 hour ride. That starts now - well, it might be a bit late if you're setting off early. Eat a good sized carb meal for breakfast too. Leave enough time for it to digest.

Not wishing to decry the distance but carb loading the night before, really?? I am a 61 year old fat bloke and went out today and did 30 odd miles at 16mph average after a bowl of porridge and coffee for breakfast and took one bottle of weak lemon squash of which I drank about half.

Mind you it will probably be peeing down tomorrow so if you still go well done

It's great to set yourself a challnge, just go for it. I wouldn't bother increasing your calorie intake too much before the ride, but take along some energy bars and plenty of fluids. It's best to take too much than run out half way round. Plan a short break every ten miles or so just to have a look at the scenery and take on some scoff. I read somewhere to take a sip of drink every 15 mins and it works for me, and don't take much notice of fat 61 year old men who go morris dancing.

Rather than deliberating over the number of flapjacks and litres of liquid to carry, take money with you and investigate some new cafes or cakeshops.
If you must do two laps, then the helston90 suggestion is good, but can't you manage to devise a round tour? A bit of time spent on mapwork will not be wasted, the knowledge and experience gained will be of benefit in future cycle trips.
Enjoy your day out, that's the most important bit:smile:.

I find carb loading rubbish as it does nothing for me . I need meat and sugar not wimpy pasta .
I joke there as I get my carbs from veg as pasta really does nothing for me and I tend to bonk if I try that kind of diet .
I always take two full bottles of water if I go out for a ride over 20 miles as I can decant one if I feel I don't need it after a few miles or if I decide I want to go further I have two bottles to re fill .
Take two bottles and go for 50

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
50 miles today, stopped for coffee and a piece of cake half way. Just over 3/4 of a 750ml bottle consumed, squash 2 parts, energy drink 1 part, Porridge for breakfast. If it had been warmer I would have taken another bottle maybe. Have a good breakfast before you leave.

I'm with you on this.

3 hours or so of exercise is creditable but it's hardly circumnavigating the globe.

I don't usually bother to eat (or drink very much) for the first 50 miles.
500 ml bottle should be more than adequate.
Maybe a dozen jelly babies just in case.

True but we are all different . I can go for a 30 mile ride without eating breakfast . I have probably gone further without eating and can work hard all day without food but that's just the way I am .
