I had a theory that all years ending in a 7 were bad years. Can't remember what was so bad about 1977, but 1987 was the last year of the hell known as Secondary School life. OK, I stayed on an extra 2 years for 6th form at the same school. I really should have gone somewhere else, but was probably too scared to tell my parents what a miserable, depressing, soulless and lonely period the previous 2 years had been.

Anyway, got good results at O-levels, and 6th Form was a lot better, but discovered 2 years later that a clean break might have been better for my sanity.

Love the cars: I didn't start driving until '88 and didn't have anything nearly so 'modern'!

Looks like a Vauxhall Cavalier he's passing, The cream one is a Ford Escort, as is the dark blue one across the road. What's the pale blue one behind it? Initially I thought it was one of those "jelly mould" Ford Sierras but not so sure....maybe a Peugeot?

I'd say a Sierra for sure. I'd have thought that the cream one was a Nova.

nova - could be. I thought it another escort originally.

what's that red car right in the foreground - another cavalier? A Vauxhall Chevette/shove-it?

Being a local, I'm trying to work out where in Leicester it is, too. Currently have no idea, so probably not one of the areas with which I am familiar.

Danvers Road. The building in the distance is the Narborough Road co-op.

There was a cold spell in January, back in the days when we got snow. This is a picture of me setting out with my bike one morning in Leicester.

I couldn't help but think of this when looking at that pic - and he was right about that saddle...!

As for the cars - not sure about the red one, I initially thought some sort of Toyota - a Carina maybe? Behind the Nova is a Capri and I think the red van across the way is a Talbot Express

Very difficult. I can tell you that it isn't a VW Jetta, nor a Cavalier, nor a Cortina, nor anything BLish.

Looks like a Talbot Solara , up the road after the post is a good old Peugeot 305 which i had.
To be fair ive had a few of them cars.
I think the cream one is an Opel Kadet which is a nova behind it is a Capri mk3

In '87 I'd moved from my Allaggro to the giddy heights of a MKIV Cortina. That rusted as quickly as any Lancia, and was replaced later that year with a Rover SD1 2.6. Tres upmarket.

It's just struck me that it's 30 years this month since I first started work, or started my sentence as I have come to think of it. I clocked on, literally, a card in a wall mounted polished wooden cabinet, as a graduate trainee with Rolls-Royce in Derby.
The only thing I can remember about 1987 was Stephen Roche winning his treble.
What else was happening that year ?
Coventry won the FA Cup.
I was 21
