Compared to most other EVs and ICE vehicles the Tesla is a high performance car.

I think their slowest car is around 5 secs to 60mph. Long range AWD/performance are low 4 to low 3 0-60mph

Yep, some are crazy fast. Insurance premiums are set for many reasons, and the number of crashes is certainly one of them. Given the speed and who it attracts, then that is no doubt part of the reason for the higher premiums.

This is certainly a thing, sticking a driver in there that would normally be the kind of twonk that goes everywhere at warp factor 9 in a BMW/Audi is a recipe for disaster, what could possibly go wrong? this will end up where the insurance costs/inability to insure these things, cause EV manufacturers to be forced to slow down the acceleration rate & the all out top speed.

Next week is the ever more important Auto Shanghai.
We should get some actual production news on new batteries.

Catl have already announced they are/will be supplying batteries to auto makers at less than £3,000 for a 60 kw/h battery.
That means a 20kwh small city car has a battery cost of only £1,000

Whilst welcome news re lowering of the battery cost, you can’t extrapolate that a 20kWh battery will be a third of the 60kWh. Fixed costs will impact so it’ll be probably be more towards 50% (estimate)

Still good to see the costs heading in the right direction.

Car manufacturers usually buy the cells and build the battery themselves.
Price of course does relate to quantity so the biggest aurobcomoany gets the lowest price.

FirstBus, our local bus company has invested in electric double decker buses; 70 currently in use, with more planned. Obviously it's making a point about pollution, going greener etc., etc.. :okay:
However, now there's been a local kick off because it's being claimed that the extra weight is breaking up the local roads - !
But as we are all aware of any EV is heavier than it's ICE equivalent, so wonder where it's going to end up - ?
Just can't win - !

Read an article that said heavier cars are irrelevant and the damage is entirely due to heavy goods vehicles. The only places that need attention due to heavier cars are apparently old multi story car parks.

And even then it's about cars in general being heavier, not specifically about EVs. The paper was about carparks designed in the 50's / 60s and 70s when car weight was far less than it is today, and just advised owners that they may need to carry out structural checks to ensure they were suitable for modern vehicles.

The curb weight for a Dennis Double Decker Trident 2 (Diesel) is 17,800 kg. The weight of the new Double Decker Dennis Enviro 400 MMC is 11000kg.
So significantly lighter..

Have you not seen the worn tram lines on the inside lane of dual carriageways. There are clips where you can actually see the road surface deform under the wheels as the HGV rolls by.

Well….EVs are heavier…..but I agree they pale in comparison with HGVs.
Some random weights:

Triumph Dolomite: 1,245kg
Ford Corsair: 1,225kg

Ford Fiesta: 1,284kg (max)
Our Kona EV: 1,535kg (so 20% heavier)

My old Saab 95: up to 1,945kg
Tesla M3: 1,820kg (max)

So EVs aren’t massively different.
People’s propensity for gargantuan SUVs, however….
BMW X5: 2,495kg (max)
Volvo XC90: 2,297kg

Of course, those beasts often take up 2 parking spaces, so doesn’t matter that they are twice the weight 🤪

IParked in an underground carpark in Paris once three spaces down there was a hummer. Its roof only just below the ceiling and it was parked with the wheels on the outside of the lines marking the carparking space. Literally door to door with the car next to it. The only way out was through the boot!

What a plonker getting that for the city!

Weight of a h2 is 2903kg, weight of a hummer eV is 4500kg BTW.

Also, what weight is the ev equivalent to the BMW x5 and volvo xc90? Compare like for like might be useful if you mention those ICE car weights.

BMW ix is 2585kg curb weight or 3145kg max weight. It is kind of between x3 and x5. Narrower than x5 but closer to x5 in other dimensions. A little heavier. 4% heavier or 26% heavier using max weight. It depends whether your weights are max or curb weights.

Volvo ex90 is 2818kg from what I've just found out. Also heavier, but not much heavier. 22% heavier.

So EV direct equivalents to ICE cars could be a low 4% heavier or in the 20% heavier weight range. Or if you want a hummer it's 55% heavier in ev version!
