I’ve got a suggestion for you t

Thanks for all the work you put in.
If we were to choose a long course somewhere and make our own segment up on Zwift at a place we all recognise near the beginning , then just ride a set distance , would that work ? And would it open any more routes ?

I guess it would just mean more groundwork in the beginning , but a lot of times I just jump on and do what I want , instead , we could just see what happens if it was a spawned meet up instead of ride

You can set the distance - or time - to whatever you like for a meetup. So yeah, in theory we could set a 20 mile distance (for example) on a particular course, and create a strava segment after the event to take the times from. I've kind of resisted doing this just because of the added complication of explaining this to everyone and getting the segment correct so that it definitely picks up everyone's ride. Happy to give it a try though.

P.S. I've just remembered why I haven't been doing this - I actually did it once for an Alpe Du Zwift stage where I changed the distance so it would include the descent back down. But it then sent us all off in different directions, and in my mind I kind of blamed it on my changing the distance for the meetup. However, we later did Alpe Du Zwift again without me changing the distance (so just the ascent) and it had the same glitch, so maybe a problem with that route and not the distance changing thing after all. So, yeah maybe worth a try again - feel free to make suggestions...

I'm now getting a slight headache already at the thought of setting up a race based on distance only, and having to re-explain several times that times will NOT be based on start/finish banners 😕
(I've lost count of the number of times I've explained about the strava segment times on meetups and people are still getting confused!)

well none of you may believe this but I actually have a 9/10 excuse for not racing tonight...
See today is my 40th birthday....Why is this is fact alone a 9 out of 10 excuse I hear you say? Well, because as we all know, death pre race is a solid 9/10. And right now shot gun to the head feels like a viable option...

40 years old... what a joke...

I think most people are used to the existing set up now, I agree that it might confuse things more to change (and make more work). It's only really for TTS that it makes a big difference

I thought this was very clear.

- Strava segment times are taken from banner to banner. Meetup starts and finishes either side of banner (exact distance varies). Race before the banner if you need/want to, just in order to get into position for drafting for the rest of the race (unless it's a TT as no drafting anyway), and then race between the banners.

- Sprint at the end - to the banner - is worthwhile if you go faster as a result, as your time will be quicker. But no point sprinting to the meetup end point after you've passed the start/finish banner as strava segment time is taken from there, not the meetup end point.

I had been a little unsure before the last few pages of discussion, so I tended to go out from the start, especially on a normal race to try and get the best drafting benefit.

I did the same on the TT race, which I later realised was a waste of energy.
