Lovely day in the Peak District yesterday: arrived at about 04:00 and parked up near Great Longstone for a nocturnal pedal along the Monsal Trail, through the tunnels, 5 miles to Miller's Dale where I intended to go to to park for the rest of the day. Details said it was shut from midnight until 06:00 but it wasn't so I could have just gone straight there! Still, I know for next time.. 👍
I'd planned an 8½ ish
mile hike along Chee Dale, Kings Sterndale, Topley Pike & back to Miller's Dale for a coffee in the old railway station café.
As it was still early, just after 06:00, the car park eas empty as was Chee Dale. I've not been there before but can imagine that it resembles Christmas on Oxford Street on a sunny Saturday!!
The trail alongside the River Wye starts off quite easy but has some interesting rocky bits to navigate, plus the two sets of Stepping Stones that the Dale is famous for..
One of the rocky descents, with my stick for scale.. 😂
Once out of the gorge the terrain changed to up & down steep (and I mean STEEP) footpaths to Kings Sterndale where I followed a footpath down Topley Pike that, all of a sudden, had a closed sign with a really tricky unsuitable diversion along the steep side of the hill. That's probably why my ankles ached later in the day; walking with them twisted sideways!!
Anyways up.. I reached the end and crossed the A6 to pick up a bridleway that took me to the Monsal Trail for an easy level walk back to the car.
Up to this point I think I only saw 3 or 4 people but the Monsal was quite busy & the car park was rammed with people looking for somewhere to park, several of whom asked if I was leaving but I still had coffee to drink ☕
The walk turned out to be 10 miles. Most enjoyable!! 👌
