Like most,it was on some old bike(probably my brothers)being held by my dad till he just let go and told me to pedal. He didn't buy us new bikes as he said we'd outgrow them. My first proper bike was a Holdsworth 10 speed heavy steel bike, which i shared with my older brother. I did miles on that bike, the longest ride being through The Trough Of Bowland up to Silloth in Cumbria in 1977.

It was a trike for me too, handed down from my Cousin to his younger Sister then to me followed by my 2 Sisters then the next door neighbour's lad and his 2 younger siblings. It's probably still going now but I lost track of it in the late 90s.

EDIT - I don't think it was new when my eldest Cousin had it either.

I had a mate in school who lived a long way from school and had to get the coach in. Another friend suggested we ride to his one weekend day. So despite being forbidden when I mooted the idea, I got up very early, snuck my Panther ( a Chopper copy), out of the shed and armed with an A to Z, a canvas rucksack and some crappy Pifco lights, set off on an adventure that would start me on my cycling career. I won't say what happened when I got back but I was in for it, luckily it didn't put me off.

That journey became a regular one, the bikes got better, the times got faster as my mate started doing it too in reverse and a competitive element entered into it.

Can't remember. Can't even remember my first bike. My second bike is a Raleigh Tomahawk in metallic amber with mag alloy wheels which I was reunited with in the mid 90s. That brings back a lot of memories.

Can't remember my first time on a bike, but my first time on a fixie left me bruised, battered and bloodied. The bike's owner lived at the top of a steep hill. My legs got shredded when I took my feet off the pedals and I have what is very probably a false memory of the flesh below my ankle getting caught between the chain and the sprocket (I still have a scar there half a century later). Unable to get my feet back on the pedals to brake, I looked for a hedge and emerged with a head full of thorns.

I was given a red trike for my birthday. Went to the end of the road and back. Brilliant bike. I loved it. It had different coloured streamers coming out of the end of the handle bars. There was a step between the 2 back wheels where someone could stand behind and put their hands on the riders shoulders. I was about 7 years old. ^_^
Sounds like my bike, too. White saddle, IIRC.
Sounds like there's a pattern building here. Red Trike, step on the back...

And for the record, I'd a similar one. Bought from a shop that closed up years ago. Distance, about 100 yards each way. I'd have been 4 - 5 years old.

I was about 5 or 6 years old and my dad had decided it was time for the stabilizers on my little red bike to come off. I was fine until I realised that my dad was no longer holding onto the rear of the saddle. I panicked and hit the tarmac after covering about 10 yards down the street. That crash is one of my earliest memories and it hurt but I persevered. One of my mates had a similar experience and has never ridden a bicycle since! (we're both now 56).

Probably for about 2 feet (at the time I thought it was about 30 feet, but everything was bigger when you were younger so I'm now doubting this; thus I'm halving the distance and subtracting 13 feet for exaggeration). Done on a hand me down girls bike from a girl called Sue (beggars can't be choosers). Proud to say all on my own, no help given, just learnt by myself the hard way!
