I tried the 'Northen Branch' of the Transpennine Trail that links Kirkburton to roughly the eastern part of the Woodhead pass.

It's a very quiet route but at times takes very rough tracks that often spoil these routes. Luckily it's been dry so it's just bumpy not muddy. And of course it's very hilly to climb over the moors. But the views are great and it's nice they've taken the time to map it.

This is on one of the rough sections, looking south towards Woodhead.

Bet that felt good !!

Oh, it did, I would have extended the ride but I hadn't taken a bottle with me because I was only going for a short bimble. I won't make that mistake next time.

Out on a standard 50km loop out to Upton and return around the back of Market Bosworth ,I've been a bit of colour since Friday with a throat infection so I wasn't sure how the legs would be . Downhill to start with and the legs feel ok up the first climb and still feel ok so I continue to press on ,At the halfway point I'm averaging 17 mph which is quick for me .As I was coming back into Market Bosworth I could hear a group catching me from behind as they past me I decided to try and hang on and the pace ups a few miles chatting to discover it's Poplar CC ride who I know a few riders from chatted with 1 rider about a local charity I used to do with some of their riders. At the point where our route parted . The rider I was chatting with said are you Phil ,To which I replied yes desperately trying to recognise the rider something I'm terribly at thankfully he introduced himself as @JonBuoy of this parish .Sorry I didn't recognise you Jon . Again pressed on all the way home to finish with an average of 17.7mph my quickest ride of this loop by some way

Good to see you today. By the way you got on the front and dragged us along for a bit I reckon you are on the mend. Apologies for not recognising you sooner but in my defence the only other time I met you (briefly) was back in 2018 - and this time you weren't wearing your Cyclechat top.
It was a lovely day to be out on the bike having my legs ripped off by my mates who then waited so that they could do it again

After a week of walks and national trust scones it was good to get out on the bike again. The forecast suggested thick clouds by the coast and Lake District so I decided on Bowland. I headed to Quernmore and the first big climb of the day up Jubilee Tower. Nice views and took advantage of a tail wind to winch myself up. Next was Trough of Bowland and on to Dunsop Bridge, the self styled centre of Britain. It was fairly busy, boosted by a huge number of car club events including TVR, MR2, a miscellaneous group of vintage machines sporting rally plates and a lot of scooters as well as motorcycles. I kept going to Slaidburn for lunch by the riverside. This gave much needed energy to head up Cross ‘o’ Greet. The climb up the upper Hodder is always lovely and the switchbacks give it an alpine feel. The descent home was uneventful apart from Wray scarecrow festival gearing up for next weekend. Lots of Curlew, oyster catchers, skylarks and meadow pipit on the fells but bird of the day is the sand martins who have returned to their same burrows in the sediments of the Lune after a migration back from south of the Sahara. 86 km with 1346 m of climbing.

Pictures are of view from Jubilee Tower toward Bowland, Hodder valley climb, Croos ‘o’ Greet and view across to Ingleborough and Whernside.

It's been over a month since I last logged in so there is some catching up to do. I'll start off with the most recent rides, beginning with Thursday:

Much of the month has gone by with only a handful of rides done, certainly not enough to be at the fitness level I want in order to keep up with the Century a Month Challenge. With only 4 free days left to the end of April I'd eyed up Friday to try and do the ride but I needed something to loosen up the legs a bit beforehand so a gentle local loop seemed a good idea. and settled for Condover, Upton Magna and back through the centre of Shrewsbury, which should make fairly good use of the wind direction.

There seemed to be a bit of inconsiderate driving about on this one but the day was bright, sunny and fairly warm so it didn't spoil the mood for very long. With it still being the Easter holiday locally there were a few other cyclists about but there were more of them as I got closer to the town. I caught another rider going fairly slow on the old canal path but once I'd overtaken him he seemed to be in a racing mood and chased me down. He got past again at the weir then took off along the riverside path at a speed I thought was rather reckless given the number of people out walking. I took it more leisurely here then turned off to tour round the town centre then into The Quarry (saw my brother at work) and out of town over the English Bridge and through Sutton.

22.2 miles at 13 mph average. Strava says 869 feet of climbing. Good to get out and I think that the most recent changes to the Hawk have made a big improvement as it seemed to scoot along well with not too much effort.

Glorious blue skies today and apart from a strong Easterly wind bringing a distinct chill to proceedings it was a lovely day. I had a bit more time than usual so I headed up north, starting on my usual forest trails.

P1020642.JPG

As I get deeper into the forest the scenery changes from densely packed plantations to more natural stands of Pine and Birch. I continue to wind my way North past Anglesbeckteich and up towards the Misselhorn Heide.

P1020646.JPG

From here I head towards a forest trail I'd not traversed in years, the sandy soil starts to suck the life from my tires and I find it hard going until finally I break free of the forest eaves and pop out onto the open heathland.

P1020647.JPG

I pause awhile eating some food and soaking in the sunshine, before heading on to the top of the ride. Surprisingly for such a popular part of the heathland there's not a soul in sight, I have the place to myself. Slowly my route swings round to the south and the way home, a popular trail gives way to more quieter routes in a remote section of forest. A Buzzard is spooked and swoops down low next to me, then off to my right in a small clearing I see a Wild Boar with a brood of Piglets.

P1020652.JPG

I'm onto faster firmer gravel trails now and flying under the spring sunshine, all great fun as I fly along. I pas through a small nature reserve and pause for a break at the entrance gate.

P1020653.JPG

From here it's fast run for the last 18 km on fine gravel trails. Enjoying the every changing scenery from the forests and farmland of the heathland and hardly another soul to be seen.

P1020651.JPG

I arrive home dusty and happy after a lovely 69.5 km of fantastic gravel riding in some lovely spring weather.

Today i had a deck to replace, a house to clean, a garden shed to clear out, and a roast dinner to cook, so naturally my priority was to find time for a short ride first.

A bit of off-road past woodland ponds then through Mickleham and up the Box Hill Zig Zag. Someone appeared to be calling me on the ascent, but denied it when i stopped to ask.
Had a quick drink at the viewpoint, then continued through the village, over Headley Heath and took the shallow but long/fast descent towards Epsom and through Ashtead.
Then the boring bit through Leatherhead (a star of the 'Chav Towns' coffee table tome) and home.

Friday: Ready or not I had to have a go at a century ride to stay in the Imperial Century a Month challenge. Friday wasn't ideal since I had work the next day but it did at least give me a couple more days as a back up if I didn't make it.

I had my usual early start not long after 7am and set out using the Hawk to do the least hilly route I could think of. I haven't previously ridden the exact version of the route I came up with and I knew I'd need to add some extra distance to get the century. I started by heading into Shrewsbury, joining the riverside path then the old canal path to Uffington. I bypassed Upton Magna this time and headed straight for Atcham then Cross Houses, Berrington and Condover where I reckoned this start had given me 12 and a half miles extra compared to riding the direct way. This should be enough.... I thought any way.

From Condover I headed for Longnor where there was a pause for a second breakfast. It felt quite warm when I stopped here and I took off some layers - that was a mistake and they went back on pretty quick. Then it was on to Acton Burnell and Cressage. Quarter of the distance done already and going fairly well so far. I can't avoid climbing altogether and it's a long drag up through Eaton Constantine to Uppington. I'd really hoped to pick up the tailwind now but I'm not sure how much it was actually helping as I wasn't especially quick on the good downhill section on Bluebell Lane.

Progress was fairly good through Rodington Heath, Roden and on the way to Shawbury. This is all fairly flat riding which was good - shame the roads aren't a bit smoother - at least I could ride round the speed humps in Shawbury though. One car that overtook me hit them hard enough that the back wheels left the ground! With 40 miles on the clock now it seemed an ideal time to stop for another snack at Moreton Corbet with a view of the castle ruins and the whine of helicopters in the background from the nearby airfield.

Moving on again I started with more flat riding for a bit before the long but gentle climbs on the way to Wem. This is a bit of a fast road but the traffic didn't cause me too much bother. An interesting looking (and sounding) American classic car came past twice on this stretch. Just a small pause in town for a photo before taking to some quieter lanes to Lowe, Northwood and Lyneal. I knew that it would be hillier than I'd like but I needed the miles so went through Welshampton and up to Coptiviney. There is a steep bit that I wasn't looking forward to but I got up it alright, if a little slowly.

From Ellesmere to Gobowen I wanted to avoid the marked cycle network route as I know how bad the road surface has got. reversing what I did last time I was here was the obvious choice but I turned off one junction too early and ended back up on the main road I'd not long turned off. A bit of a detour later I was back on track through Criftins and past Dudleston Hall. Another stop for lunch was taken in a gateway I'd stopped at on the last ride. A view over the fields from here but nothing special. 65 miles done which was good but the first doubts started to appear about whether I'd judged the distance right. I was a bit slow on the remaining lumpy lanes to Gobowen and enjoyed what I knew would be the last of the tailwind into the town centre.

I was a little apprehensive about the next section into Oswestry as I've had issues with cramp on these hills in the past. All went well this time and I headed through town and out via the industrial estates, which I haven't ridden for a long time. I caught a couple of cyclists on the way to Ball and decided not to overtake as my next turning was coming up soon. They turned off the same way, and again at the next junction so I overtook with a greeting. Next time I looked back I found the pair of them following closely. They didn't follow after the next crossroads and I eased off a bit, but a little too late as my legs did cramp just after a short climb near Morton. Fortunately they recovered fairly quickly but it made me a bit more cautious.

Fortunately I had a good mile or two of mostly gentle downhill, which helped but I was running short of energy and the stops for drink and jelly babies became more frequent as I passed Llwyntidmon Hall and along the flat roads to Melverley. I realised that my mileage was going to be short. I added some distance by taking a left at The Royal Hill to take a longer way to Pentre and the same again after Wilcott to take a detour into Nesscliffe. This helped but by the time I reached Forton I realised I was still at least half a mile short, so turned right after the very slow Bicton climb and took the longer (but flatter) way through Gains Park, the new estate at Bowbrook, Nobold and Meole Brace. This did the trick and I was very glad to see the mileage roll past the century without having to find anything extra.

101.59 miles at 12.3 mph average. 3410 feet of climbing showing on Strava. Very hard work on the wrong choice of bike but it's done and I'm still in the challenge for another month.:wahhey:

Longest ride I’ve done for a long while today, rode around the Surrey Hills with the old bike crowd. Must have been about 50 of us in total, but we rode in small groups. Total of about 60miles on a Masi 3V, bike was great although I need to make a few adjustments. Not least needing a gear lower than a 42;24 for some hills. Thankfully they weren’t too long so stubbornness got me over all of them even though I thought my legs were going to stop turning at one point.

I’ve been away in Calpe for a week with my old cycle club/ mates from up north.

Saturday (19Apr) well, despite my lack of descending ability.

The next day (Sunday 20th) started OK too and I was 4th up the Bernia without going too deep. Then my hands started playing up on the longish descent and I let that put me off and ended up dropped. I caught the last two riders just as they were going wrong directionally and whilst I was going right directionally stopping for then somehow switched our Garmins onto the first part of the route which took us up the Bernia again.

Easter Monday (21st Apr) started OK but we stopped too long before the main climb and I got too cold below the ankles. The net result I was 7mins behind my Val de Ebo PB of 2 years ago (29.44). Frustratingly, after having problems with my hands the day before I let that play on my mind descending and had to chase back a little too much. That was the day before the recovery ride, so it shouldn’t have been a problem.

Except although Tuesday (22nd Apr) was a recovery pace I wouldn’t exactly call it a recovery route.

Lol, I'll have to split this up as I've a bit too many images.

Cont.

Wednesday (23rd) wasn’t too bad despite the lack of recovery until we stopped at a cafe for a drink before the main Port du Tudons climb and in the shade I got a bit cold below the knees again, the net result I was again down on my PB of 2 years ago (57mins) by a massive 11mins. I wore thin arm warmers for the descent which stopped my hands going completely numb though

Thursday (24th) started not too bad until someone decided we’d have a seeded time trial up the Col de Rates and setting us off according to previous times. I was 4th fastest on Handicap with a 23:36 which meant I was hanging around for ages and again below the knees got to cold for proper blood flow. Lol, and there was no way I was getting my 2009 KOM back
:joy:
