I managed to get two rides in yesterday.
Morning: I'd planned to get out and do a longer ride but had a bit of a slow get up, which turned out to be fortunate as I was still in when
@gavgav phoned to ask if I could help out with a problem on his bike. He'd set out on a ride himself only to have an awful noise from the brakes at the end of his road. I got myself ready and headed over - Gav had already changed brake pads before I got there and had done a good job leaving me to do final checks and adjustments. The problem was that the spring that keeps the pads apart had somehow managed to twist enough to get tangled in the disc itself. Not something I've seen happen before.
With that done we set out to get as much of a ride in as we could in the time Gav had available. We headed out of town via Weeping Cross and past Betton then into Condover along Lyons Lane, which still has more traffic than usual due to people trying to avoid the temporary lights. The local paper reports that these are due to be removed this coming week, which will be good.
It was a plod into the headwind to Dorrington where we crossed the A49 to climb up the road to Picklescott. I genuinely can't remember when I last rode this in this direction so it was a nice novelty. The brake problem might have been fixed but Gav 's bike had been making odd noises, particularly on freewheeling, so when we paused at our next junction I checked to see if I could find what's wrong - I couldn't find a fault with the freewheel and the noise only appears when the bike is actually being ridden so I suspect the wheel bearing. That will need further investigation.
We carried on to Wilderley on nice quiet lanes that made it a bit easier to chat, then at Pulverbatch we picked up a good tailwind which made for some exhilarating riding to Longden, Hook-a-Gate and down to Meole Brace. Strava shows us both having set new personal bests for 10km on this stretch.
23.7 miles by the time I got back at 12.7 mph average. Strava shows 1412 feet of climbing. Not what either of us had planned but we made the most of it and it was a very enjoyable sociable ride in some nice Spring-like weather. I actually started off with too many layers on.
No photos from this one.

Afternoon: Having had some lunch I found myself looking out at a sunny and pleasant afternoon and thinking that it would be a shame to waste this nice weather. I'd have loved to get my brother out for his first ride of the year but unfortunately he twisted his knee playing badminton a couple of evenings ago so wasn't up for it. The route choice was a lazy one just to make an easy route and I set out to head for Acton Burnell.
I braved the A49 this time - not too much traffic on it but one driver waiting at the lights had blocked the junction which made getting onto the main road a bit awkward. I started off into a brisk headwind and the legs didn't feel fresh having already done one ride so I wasn't very quick to Condover. That headwind lasted through Ryton and Longnor but when I turned towards Acton Burnell I didn't seem to get the boost from it that I was hoping for, except when I got onto the twisty bit approaching the village. It did seem to help along the straight at Cound Moor though and it could have been a good fast run along here if not for needing to slow for a horse, then a car a bit later on.
It was surprisingly muddy at the top of the climb at Harnage then I found the Shropshire flag flying when I dropped into Cound. I decided to head up to the A458 as that would delay having to turn back into the wind and shortly after Cound Stank another rider caught me up. We had a chat for a little while. It was his first ride for 6 weeks he said, and yet when we parted he still took off up the road as if I was stood still. Ho, hum.
The A458 wasn't too bad so I stayed on it into Cross Houses. A passer by urged me to "keep pedalling, jockey".

The legs were feeling a bit fatigued by the time I reached Berrington and I wasn't fast for my second traverse of Lyons Lane. I wasn't feeling any strains or aches though so I'm hopeful that I've got the setup about right again.
From Condover I risked heading the flatter way back up to and along the A49. It was more of a cross wind here so not helping much until I reached the main road. I was annoyed on joining the A49 that a driver coming the other way went for an overtake, forcing me to scoot over towards the kerb.

Oddly, despite that I felt pretty chilled about it by the time I got back so it didn't spoil what had mostly been a very pleasant ride.
Exactly 24 miles showing on my speedometer at the end, with a 13.3 mph average. 1028 feet of climbing according to Strava. Nice to get that second ride in. Spring isn't here just yet but today held the promise that it is on its way.
I wasn't really thinking about photography so just a couple of snaps from my usual places: Looking towards the Stretton hills from Ryton.....
..... and towards the Wrekin from near Harnage.
