A ride of two halves....

Planned 65mike ride from grassington to Masham leyburn return.

Nice on the way out over to patley bridge and up to lofthouses past gouthwaite reservoir and the climb up trap hill.

Bacon bap and coffee in Masham where there was a livestock show in the village square.

Then onto leyburn passing the abbey.
I turned off before leyburn towards west witton but this was a big mistake, as I ended up on an unmade road and lost my computer and glasses. Then I found I had a slow puncture so had to change the tub.

As I did the rain started to fall and my legs were getting tired! Second donut helped but I knew that once over top the ride to grassington was gently down hill.

Got back at 4:10 to pick up my daughter!

A mate I hadn’t seen for ages messaged me a couple of weeks ago asking to come out on our group gravel/mtb ride today. Only thing was that I gathered from the silence on our WhatsApp group last night that group would be just me. I have things on my mind and was thinking about bailing but as there wasn’t likely to be anyone else turning up to meet him I forced my self out. I’m glad I did.

I went out on my mountain bike today with not much of a plan.

This materialised into a ride through to Plympton St Maurice via a herd of south Devon cattle, then on through Saltram, past Hooe lake, Jennycliff for a flat white and bacon roll, up to Staddon Heights, Brixton and the tough finish of Puslinch Hill.

Almost 23 foggy miles.

First proper ride on the new bike so chose a route with various bail out options in case of any discomfort. I waited for the rain to pass then headed north toward Kendal. I skirted the town and went via the hills that cradle it. This also gave me chance to use all the gears I had bought! I passed the turn to Longsleddale but carried on to Staveley for lunch. Weather improved in the afternoon and I was discarding layers that had seen sensible at the outset. Home via the lovely Lyth valley. 103 km with 1170 m of climbing.

Pictures are of bike by a canal bridge approaching Kendal, view across the town into the clouds and Lyth valley.

A lovely ride around the lanes and through Longleat today, with a stop off at the Bath Arms before heading back. I had to grit my teeth to tackle the hills (or inclines, they felt like hills to me!) It was tough going at times but I was pleased with a tad over 9 miles. The woods were stunning, full of ferns turning into their Autumn orange.

@geocycle - very jealous of your scenery!

Great work - is that your first since your hiatus..?

Today began with a necessary if uninspiring utility trip south against the headwind to the next village via the back roads. First obvious thing was how I'd mis-judged the weather - its reality being warm and humid - not ideal for (lightweight) trousers or even the single base layer without the sleeves rolled up.

Primary mission accomplished it was ostensibly back home, however I elected instead to press on north toward dogsh*t city and execute the supermarket salad trip I'd slated for later in the day.

Eventually I got there; legs protesting more than expected since I've been off the bike since wed, however it seems yesterday's plant-butchery in the garden has taken its toll - on my hamstrings especially.

As I rummaged in the pannier for my locks my mind jolted to the potential horror of a wasted journey if I'd forgotten my locks... thankfully they were both present; however my sigh of relief was cut short by the subsequent realisation that I'd left my f*cking keys at home

I hopefully wheeled the bike inside in the vain hope that the security guard would take pity on me for all of the sixty seconds if would have taken me to have grabbed the bag of salad I went in for, however his sour face and subtly shaking head as I approached told me all I needed to know. Despite my protestations the line was held and I left, muttering my unfiltered disgust not-really-under my breath.

Significant round trip wasted (functionally at least) I returned home, stewing inside and out in the humidity. The edge was taken off by some pleasant interactions - highlights including avoiding, bothering and subsequently warning of the presence to another cylcist of a placid toad on one of the bridleways..

There were lots of people out doing typical outdoorsy stuff; no doubt clinging to this last summer-adjacent day before the misery sets in.

Ultimately a little under 27 fasted miles and 1200ft at 12.7mph and 125bpm for 1200kcal burned.. bringing this weeks' otherwise slightly anemic, Brompton-exclusive escapades to a fairly respectable 87 miles.

Also of note, Strava says I did 32hrs on the bike last month; up slightly from August's 31 hours and a world away from what I've been averaging since I had to move away from the city..

That was the second ride since my hiatus, absolutely loved it. Brompton miles sound a lot of fun.

For the first time ever I went out on a road bike ride with a riding buddy, that wasn’t the Fragrant MrsP.

I chucked the bike in the back of the jam jar, and drove to Newbury to meet my friend, and he took me on a lovely route on mostly single track country lanes in West Berkshire and Hampshire borders.

Weather was perfect, hardly any wind, the sun was shining, the roads were dry. It felt almost like spring, not early autumn.

There was very little traffic, and what we did see was mostly patient and courteous. Non of the place names were familiar to me, it was nice to ride somewhere different, we stopped at a smashing little cafe for coffee and cake about halfway in a village with the interesting name of Hurstbourne Tarrant, then onwards up some slight hills to Watership Down country, then down again.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better than this, I got stung by wasp that hitched a lift in my helmet. The blasted blister!

After evicting the blighter and telling the insect what I thought of him and his bally lot, we carried on back to the meeting place.

A smidge over 32 miles. Bloody smashing ride.
