Your ride today.... (part 1)

I did a hilly 48 mile loop today to get a few more miles in my legs before my forum ride this coming Saturday.

My pal Bill joined me at the bottom of the Heptonstall Rd and we then set off up the climb. We were pretty much following the first part of local audax ride Season of Mists, though we chose to ride the easier route to Slack via Lee Wood Road rather than straight up the steeper climb through Heptonstall village, with its cobbled main street.

We had a tailwind most of the way out, except for where we turned across the wind at Fence in the Forest of Pendle. There is a lovely lane that goes along parallel to Pendle Hill and we rode along there in bright sunshine. The wind was a bit chilly, but it was otherwise a great day to be out on the bikes.

We dropped down into Sabden and began what is normally a very stiff climb over the Nick o'Pendle, but today we had a fabulous tailwind to assist us. The SoM route descends all the way to cross the A59 on the way to Clitheroe, but we turned left and continued on another quiet lane through Pendleton to Wiswell, where we turned right and descended over the A59, then turned left and headed down into Whalley through which we will be passing on Saturday.

I spotted a new bike shop on the corner by the mini-roundabout where we turned left to climb up to Spring Wood. I didn't have time to take a close look, but I reckon it will be an up-market shop.

We climbed the Old Roman Road above @totallyfixed's home village of Read. A quick descent into Padiham took us to the Greenway, which we ascended to Rose Grove.

We were minding our own business, waiting patiently for a gap in the traffic to emerge onto the A646 when a passenger in a taxi passing in front of us spotted our bikes and clearly thought that we needed a good tongue-lashing so he leaned out of the rear window and hurled abuse at us, to the amusement of the small boy sitting next to him. Watch and learn, son - watch and learn!

So after Mr Juan Kerr had finished his paternal duties for the day, we finally made our way up to the traffic lights. Normally we continue straight on up Rossendale Road, which gets steeper and steeper until it levels off just before Manchester Road. Today, however, I wanted to try out an alternative route through Burnley which has half the climbing for a mere 0.9 km increase in distance. I won't bother describing the new route because we both decided that the traffic was worse and we preferred our traditional route. Stick to that!

We had a really stiff headwind all the way down Cliviger Gorge to Todmorden where I stopped for a quick cuppa with Bill, then whizzed back to Hebden Bridge before the evening traffic got too heavy.

I can feel myself getting stronger ride-by-ride. If I can avoid injury or further illness, then I should be pretty fit by the end of the summer.
The second picture is the ride I used to do when I rode from Read to Barley, recognised it instantly, and of course we did it on the Pendle ride with you last year.
The new shop in Whalley is The Fell, we will be there on Friday afternoon to look at what might be dr_pink's new TT bike, we know them well as they are also the ProTool cycle mechanics who were at Onyx bikes, where dr_pink bought her hill climbing / road bike which if dry she will be riding on Saturday.

Set out on Sunday to do the Solihull Reliability Trial. Got as far as Earlswood Lakes on my way to the start point before suddenly losing drive. Pedalling turned the cassette but not the wheel. Didn't think to try changing gears until I got home and that got the wheel turning again.

All the info I've been given points to the hub, which I've just had serviced. So it's back to the bike shop when I can to get him to look at it again.

Seven miles of what should have been 70-plus.

And congrats to @Fubar on his first ton :becool:

Thanks, it was actually my 2nd ton the last one being last years' epic CC Ecosse Perth ride - though that took about 10 hours in total so this was somewhat quicker, though still a bit slow for you I suspect ;)

A cracking ride, swithering whether to do it all again this weekend...

I had a similar problem a while ago. In my case it was the pawls in the hub not doing their job. I dismantled it, cleaned it up and used light oil to lube it. No issues with it since then. But, as you have just had it serviced, back it should go!
Shame about it messing up your ride though..

Nice pics, @totallyfixed and @ColinJ . I really need to do a cycling tour of the UK! :hello:
We really do have some great cycling in the UK if you know where to go and I am sure that plenty of CC members would help you plan a route. If you wanted company some days, that could be arranged too; well, apart from the far north of Scotland maybe, where we are thin on the ground.

The biggest negative can be the weather. We have had a lot of wet summers since 2007, last year being a notable exception.

Went for a flattish ride today, wanted to get out in the sunshine to clear the head. It was a bit chilly when I set off but had to stop a few miles up the road to swap the gloves for mitts and remove the jacket. I could have stayed there all day.

I moved on eventually and accidentally came home via the LBS. New gilet ordered, hopefully that'll sort the bit chilly/too warm problems of this time of year (and again in autumn). All in all I clocked up 25 miles or thereabouts with 1000ft of climbing.

Lovely view, as usual!

I have been wearing a lightweight Montane gilet on rides for a few weeks now and it works really well. I remember from past rides that it starts to feel a bit too much when temperatures approach 20 degrees C, but these gilets pack down really small, so that isn't a problem. The combination of gilet and arm wamers is enough to cope with light showers and strong winds, but they can be removed if conditions improve.

A lovely 10 miles today - wanted to do more but my son wimped out.
Not too eventful but I have noticed that I'm getting fitter - I was positively storming it today, though that may have been the bowl of porridge I had for breakfast
I got some encouragement from two ladies walking up cemetery hill....with shouts of 'you can do it! ringing in my ears I got up in one go and I'm sure just a little faster this time! Thanks ladies

Headed into the woods via the cycle paths and once up to where I wanted to be, had a great ride downhill.
I did notice I was standing on the pedals a bit more than normal but didn't think anything of it.
Until I got to the bottom and stopped for a drink.
Hanging over the handle bars, breathing like a steam train, I noticed it.
Yip, I had forgotten to take the lock off the forks!
I would have headed up again for another go but son wanted to head home....next time he can go and I'll stay and play

Did I mention I love my new bike?:bicycle:

Today's ride nearly did not happen.

After a couple of heavy days at work i woke late and really could not be bothered.

Then as the sun came out and the coffee (x 3 ) had done its job i was more up for it. By this time it was to late to join up with the local cycle group (one day @coffeejo i promise i will actually arrive ), so did a quick plan on the sat nav to take me on an anticlockwise loop over to the cider Distillery and back across the moors following NCN 33.

weather was cold but the sun was out, so decided on long leggings, overshoes and long fingered gloves, taking the short gloves with me. For the next hour it was a case of Mr Myagi, gloves off, mitts on, buff off, buff on, mitts of, gloves on etc. In the end it was just warm enough for the mitts.

Loads of horse riders about, some friendly and some not, quite a few cyclists and as is normal round here the local bin lorries.

Really enjoyed the ride in the end, but i need a break from work, so roll on Easter for some time off, and hopefully warmer days, so i can get out over the Levels on some of the Droves.

The really good news is the water levels are dropping :-

Beginning of the month this road was impassable
