Monday.... my ride was a 14 mile round trip to St Ives (Cambs) Market for veg and eggs..... then later I delivered eggs to elderly mum & dad in town...followed by a further ride around Huntingdon later to town for craft supplies for Mrs Sgl... Only to find.... Mr Postman decided that NCN 51 was a good place to park his van.... 2014-10-20 11.23.43.jpg
Then I decided to ride to really check out the NCN signs and saw...... on the new bit of NCN 12 section....For Cycles only... 2 pedestrians with a pushchair who walked around the cattle grid to access the path....
2014-10-20 11.25.34.jpg

As you can see in the picture....the path for pedestrians is parallel to the new cycle only section, clearly marked as not shared.... either the natives of Huntingdon need to go to specsavers, are not up to date with signs or just tribal...who knows....
There is beginning to be some Cycle Hate Behaviour locally on the Houghton to St Ives route on a section called Thicket Path.... There has been some nasty letters from Pedestrians regarding cyclists (only since the section has been widened and resurfaced of course) using the path claiming cyclists are speeding et al. you know the usual bleats from the "Take up the width of the path" "Retractable Dog Lead" "Loose Dog" "walk on the cycle marked" area pedestrians.....Such a shame we all cant seem to get on.... The latest on Thicket Path is that some Anti Social Behaviour is going on....the Tacks are coming out again... clearly not a cyclist who is to blame....
On the road bike I stay on the main road to St Ives..rather than use the path.....and many of the same pedestrians would berate me for using their road space....lol
Later yesterday..... 16:30 ...I delivered Meals on 2 Wheels to Mum & Dad....all in all yesterday.... 23 miles....
Today.... too busy to get much in sadly..... It'll be a 2-5 mile around town with chores during the day.....

My ride today was blummin awful! Haha

The usual commute of 7.35 miles but the strong winds and rain were coupled with a vicious swirl of damp foliage:surrender:.

There was me casually ambling along and then --thwack-- right in the forehead, could of been wet leaves or shrubbery but it was hard enough for me to check if i was bleeding, blummin hurt! Then out of the blue comes a black bin bag!! Swept across from the left, nothing i could do, couldn't swerve due massive scary trucks on the right!! After a loud girly scream and maybe a sweary word :shy: (just a little one) it was then swept up over the back of the bike missing every spoke, whoop whoop!!
I now have a massive cuppa at work (and shaky knees) but i did it, didnt chicken out:training: even if i do have a sore noggin now:B)

I got dive bombed by one. Must have been near its nest or something........or it thought I was a rabbit. Lol.
Neighbour wasn't so lucky. It actually scratched his neck with its talons.
Out walking once and fish head just missed me. Never saw what dropped it but the local trout farm was having problems with Herons or it might have been cormorants. Either way no right to drop a trout head on me!

Just back from my ride to college - I baled on cycling in my college clothes and dug out my winter kit for the first time this season. Glad I did because after a long (and unusually slow) downhill being battered by side winds from gates and holes in the 'hedge' I spotted a fantastic double rainbow... sadly it was into the headwind which meant one thing and one thing only - that volume of rain was soon to find me and it did... it was also rather cold - the rain that is. I baled to another local lane with high hedges and banks for some shelter, but getting to college was a lot easier than getting home was. Home is westward with a northerly hint to it (just because of the road layout) and some of the gusts were not pleasant. So it was a stuff strava ride and just be safe day... Several of the older generations standing at bus stops gave me wry smiles as I cycled passed them...

there was some beautiful light though between the rain storms... but I wasn't really in the mood for stopping and getting my camera out - lunch was already late and it was slow getting home.
Ahhhh just lost electricity - that means one thing and one thing only - trees are now coming down... fingers crossed for it coming back (3rd time lucky)... 10 slow and steady miles...

Edit: just back from walk (sweet chestnut collecting) and 'met' some of that wonderful light again... 2.75kgs picked inside 45mins...

A bit windy out there. :surrender: However, it turns out that my new(ish) steel Ridgeback is wonderfully reliable in such conditions. Riding the Orbea in the wind is just asking for a "I don't think we're in Kansas any more" moment but the Ridgeback has never heard of the word "skittish" and kept both wheels on the ground. Hurrah.

Did as I said in my earlier post........orders done here this morning on the 'net for next week and week afters jobs..... then winter kit on, Rockrider MTB out and off to see the Parents...bless em ...all huddled in the warm ....
Got their prescriptions for repeats and rode down the the GP's with them...... gusty out there but not too bad....
I decided...dunno why.....to ride back along the riverside and through to Hartford Church, then home (1 km away)...... it was damn blowy next to the riverbank..... 5 miles today ( I use Cycledroid for my trip logging)

As others have noted, it's a bit breezy out there today. Once again I contemplated using the car but when the showers this morning blew past and there were no more showing on the rainfall radar I had just enough time to get the bike ready.

It's noticeably colder but that wind was behind me making for a nice quick ride apart from the straight by Attingham Park where I got pretty buffetted by the cross wind.

During the afternoon the wind seemed to pick up and I could hear the steel frame of the building creaking and groaning in the big gusts . I was therefore expecting a hard ride back. I went for the longer route the same as yesterday, reasoning that I'd be on cycle paths on the busy sections so I wouldn't have to cope with the wind and with the traffic.

Unfortunately, it did mean going directly into the wind at the start which was slow and hard work, it just needed a heavy shower to blow through to complete the effect..... oh, look at that big dark cloud :rain: .

On the path at Sundorne another rider strolled past me easily and disappeared into the distance as though there wasn't any wind . (Of course he didn't have panniers - they clearly create a huge amount of drag.;))

The rest of the trip back was with a cross wind which was a little easier.

21 miles for the round trip and a surprising 12.6 mph average - when I was crawling through Downton at a sloth-like 6mph I imagined the average would be a lot slower than this.

Yesterday.. Blowing a hooley and persisiting it down intermittently so I'm out on the bike. Today... Calm as a calm thing, sun shining, a few fluffy clouds.. You guessed it. Not out on the bike

After finishing work at 02:00 yesterday morning, I had arranged to meet up at a friends house at 09:30 for a three bike fettle as another chap had bike problems. Obviously we had coffee and chocolate chip muffins (homemade by me) first to discuss the ride over.
My 8 mile route was along the very exposed Washlands riverside cycle path straight into the teeth of the wind and rain. I think I was doing about 3 mph at some points due to a 30/40 mph headwind. Still, the wind lashed rain washed a few bits of dirt of the bike that I'd missed last time I'd cleaned it.
As most others have said.. Blimey the wind was strong! But at least it was quite warm, in fact really hot under my waterproofs..
The bikes were duly fettled, with my gears adjusted and brake pads fitted, with new gear cables fitted on another bike. Job done, and some more coffee quaffed before I had to head home and get ready for work, while t'others went for a ride around Harleston Firs. I'd have enjoyed that, but I only had an hour and a bit to get home and ready.

17 miles ridden in quie atrocious conditions, but I kept dry. Good test for the waterproofs! :rain:

It feels like I've stopped getting quicker as a cyclist so I thought I'd challenge myself a bit to see whether it really was creeping middle-age, laziness or an addiction to the rolo cookies from the local Co-op. I designed a local loop and set myself a target of 1 hour.

Now this is 25.9km (16 miles in old money), not too far I know and I keep reading about all these CCers who merrily bowl along at 18mph+. But there are hills in the way. 1600ft of climbing to be exact. I've had a couple of efforts at this and managed 1hr 5mins, then 1hr 4 mins. You'd think a few minutes here or there would be easy to shave off but it's not. So I gave it another go today, full gas, eyeballs bulging out, panting like a 70s porn film actor.

1hour 2 minutes (well 1hour 1 minute 47 seconds to be exact). I need to squeeze 107 seconds out from somewhere. Next time.....this is unfinished business

Today's target was a mere 10 miles, as it was last time when I didn't make it...
Was cold this morning, so roubaix tights and top for me, need to keep the legs warm.
Nothing exciting, just my usual route to WGP. No park laps today, just focused on hitting the target.
11 miles:hyper:
I'm just over 200 miles short of 2000 miles this year (my 3000 miles target binned due to far too many weeks in hospital), so I better pull my socks up if I'm to achieve it...
