I went for a blast along the Kennet and Avon canal on my fat bike last Friday. I must admit that as I traveled up to Reading by train the somewhat unpleasant looking showers almost put me off but I decided to battle on and see how far I got.

I was pretty soaked before I'd even left Reading and was reasonably mucky within about 10 miles but I cheerfully carried on, occasionally stopping to chat to people as they admired my huge bike tyres.

In the 18 months since I'd last tackled the K&A I'd forgotten just how grueling and demanding the 20/25 mile section of towpath into Devizes is. Last Friday's ride did a very good job of reminding me just how much of a slog it is. I almost baled at Devizes like I did last time but when I got there I got my 2nd wind so to say and decided to carry on. I'd soon bimbled past Bradford and onto Avoncliff. If it wasn't for the fact I was pretty much plastered in muck from head to foot I would have stopped at the Cross Guns for an early tea. Instead I spent a few minutes admiring the view from the aqueduct before plodding on.

I eventually made it all the way to Bath with a smidgen over 76 miles showing on my Garmin; cold, wet, filthy & very happy indeed. I was definitely completely bonkers doing the K&A in one day but was glad I did; I'm not doing it in one day again though. I had a Burger King tea before catching the train home. The 6 mile cycle ride from the station to my house felt torturous indeed; suffice to say I was glad to get home.

The day was nicely rounded off with a lovely hot shower and a couple of bottles of Hobgoblin.

How odd! I only said to my wife yesterday, whilst cycling down the Kennet and Avon canal, that somone had been down here on a fat bike, look at the tyre tracks. There was a particually muddy section, before you go under the M4 where there were still very wide tyre tracks, I wonder if they were yours.

How long did that trip take you from Reading to Bath? We did it a couple of years ago but we took two and a bit days to do it.

Well done on the first century @Dave123 and the metric century (plus a bit) @NealM :bravo:

@gavgav recently asked the same question about the climbing error on Strava. The thread about it is here

Yesterdays ride was through part of the town and then Gt Houghton village, where I got a PB up the hill through it, and on to Salcey.
I'd hoped for a cuppa there but the place was heaving and the queue was out of the door, so I didn't bother to wait. There's nowhere else on this route so it was a bit 'dry' sadly. Never mind, it happens like that sometimes..
I rode through Denton, a road I've ridden before, but decided to stop and have a bit of a look around it today. What a quaint little old village!

OK, I won't ride my bike through the archway then... :stop:

Heading homewards, I went past a place I really want to go and drown some worms.

I reckon there'll be some cracking fishing to be had here! I'll get down there one day this summer, hopefully.
At this point, I was on about 23 miles and was aiming for 30 ish so I took a longer loupe through Mears Ashby and across to Sywell.

I finished the day on 31 miles in the dry, though the clouds looked quite threatening at times.

Wow. Can't you get to some lovely places on two wheels?

For some daft reason I have decided to try to complete a Strava challenge having worked out that my 'commuting' mileage this week would bring me to within 50km or so of completing it, so in a moment of madness last night I decided to join my OH on his ride to work this morning... That guaranteed I would not sleep well last night, and I didn't, but I stuck to the plan and at 6:45am this morning was ready and waiting for him to get on his bike and cycle to work... It was dull, overcast, cold, misty and with dark ominous cloud to the north - the route we were heading. Part way to work he decided on the leisurely route, so we baled off the A49 and onto the back lanes. This now meant I had to stay with him because he doesn't do the back lanes often and wanted to know the 'alternative' route that didn't involve a dual carriageway into Stockton Heath... Shame as it also meant I could not stop to get some landscape photos as the misty was burning off, but never mind.

I'm not sure what happened over the course of the weekend, but it seems that drivers (with the one exception of a white van man) were in a good mood, and frequently held back or waited for us to pass before carrying on. All got big thank yous including a BMW driver who in a 2 way street with cars parked down both sides, rather than forcing the issue, waited for us to pass him before proceeding - perhaps I should do the lottery today?

After dropping my OH off at work and refilling on water, I headed off in some vague direction of where I could be going... and wandered around various country lanes until I finally sussed out where I was. Then I continued to meander some more and finally found myself looking at some bluebells in Ardley Hall Park...

Deciding that I was starting to flag, I headed towards home and then realised that I had recovered and headed off for some more backlanes and some more meandering...

After a couple of circuits to make sure I made 60km, I headed home. I would have done a few more, but I need to get to the hospital today - they want to run off with some blood... and then I have a few errands to do, not to mention changing the bar tape on my new bike. The new stuff is so uncomfortable.

http://www.strava.com/activities/135056116 21.0kph (13.0mph) I'm happy with that on a bowl of cereal!

Just back from another 15 miles.
I wasn't even sure I was going to go out but there was no wind and it was very mild so....
The usual loop, down to the Kelpies, onto the towpath and up to the Falkirk Wheel. Quick stop for a drink then up to the top...done in one go today
Hit a shower, which lasted all of 3 minutes.
No issues or drama until I got home
Felt the back of one of my calves sore, looked to find this....

No idea how it happened, must be the damn pedals! It's always my left leg - it's consistently black and blue!

Then as I was cleaning Priscilla, the dog was running about the garden, happy to see me.
He must have picked up a bit of branch or something and the next thing I know he's retching and coming to me, looking for help.
Opened his mouth but couldn't see anything, all the while he's making this horrendous noise!
Got my son to bring me a torch and we had another look, nothing.
I was on the verge of running him round the corner to the vet, when he took a drink and stopped.
Whatever it was must have gone down. Phew. I can deal with 'people' medical dramas but not animals!

I have cold, I didn’t feel like going out on the bike today, but I needed to go down the bank again, I needed some shopping, I needed a haircut and I wanted to get some stuff from the bike shop in Goring. It was a warm day if overcast with sunny spells and I could not bring myself to get in the car to do my errands so I got the mountain bike out. I love this bike.

Spot The Difference?

So 11.60 miles, I had to walk across the temporary footbridge at Whitchurch because they are rebuilding the Toll Bridge. The big lorries are very slowly going under the bridge in Pangbourne delivering stuff for the Bridge. Lots of blokes wearing hard hats standing on floaty boat landingy things with cranes and stuff rebuilding the bridge, a couple of them looked up at me from the river and nodded, I shouted down “ain’t you done that yet?” oh how they laughed.

Anyway did my errands and had cuppa and bacon sandwich, luvverlyjubblyticketyboocushty.

Eileen is at work so I decided to do a fast run, 15 miles 37 minutes (its fast for me) but 5 miles from home some one let loose a flying pig.........well that's what size it looked when the bugger went in my eye, even got around my sunnies, now at home with a very sore eye and an extremely runny nose.

I had organised to take Doug out to get some further mileage under his belt, however he got a last minute call wondering if he was available for a job in Glasgow, which put paid to the plan. So just me for the ride today then.

The forecast suggested a dry morning and showers in the afternoon which didn't sound enticing for a long distance ride so I decided to take the Raleigh into the hills instead and climb over the Long Mynd.

It was the usual route out as far as Leebotwood where I climbed up the High Park side this time. There was a stop on the way up to rescue a lamb that had got out onto the road but couldn't find his way back into the field.

The path across the top is still really rough where new stone has been laid. My suspicion is that they aren't going to do anything else with it which is a shame as it was possible to cruise across the plateau quite nicely on the old surface.

I stopped for lunch at the summit, and met a group of chatty walkers who took a great interest in the bike:smile:, then carried on towards the gliding club where there was a choice - drop down Asterton Bank and head back via Wentnor and Cothercott Hill or past the gliding club onto the Portway and down Nutbatch. I opted for the latter, then wished I hadn't as the Portway was really muddy and rutted - nearly came off when a wheel slipped into one of the ruts and the mud will need cleaning off.

The trip back was fairly straightforward - the wind was light so even though I was riding against it I wasn't slowed down:bicycle:, a guy hooted before overtaking which made me jump (don't think it was malicious - just a warning that he was passing like they do in some places abroad), I had to lower the saddle as it still seemed a little high after my winter adjustments and I got a fly in the eye near Ryton - that smarted a bit.:B)

35.7 miles today at 12.5 mph average.

I passed through Woolstaston on the climb up to High Park.

DSC0000825.jpg

Pole Bank. Not much in the way of a view today due to the mist.

DSC0000826.jpg

There was a bit of activity at the Gliding Club, but no aircraft up today - I think the wind was too light for them.

DSC0000827.jpg

After the recent rain it was rather muddy on the Portway.

DSC0000829.jpg

An attempt at an arty shot on the path from the Portway heading to Nutbatch.

DSC0000831.jpg

The view back towards the Gliding Club - it's where the group of trees and the white blobs are far in the distance.

@Rickshaw Phil Your bike looks well maintained, do you clean it after every ride?
Thankyou.

No, it's not cleaned after every ride - I do tend to only use that one for fair weather rides though so it was just dusty before today (the dust doesn't show up in the photos ;)). Funnily enough the walkers I was chatting with thought it was new and were quite taken aback when I said I'd had it 16 years.
