This building was a stable – probably built around 200 years ago – and it butts up against a gable-end of a farmhouse. Ten years ago the stable was in a terrible state – the walls were badly cracked and the roof was falling down. My friends have lovingly restored it .. a new slate roof, guttering, flashing,
columbage between the wall and the roof, joist-ends treated with linseed oil and stained-glass windows inserted (not obvious that they’re stained-glass from the photo – but they are).
The wall has been completely re-pointed with a bespoke mix of earth, sand and lime so that it’s now completely weather-proofed but the wall can still “breathe” as there’s no cement in the mix.
The
columbage is the diagonal wooden ‘X’s and an earth, sand and lime render .. there may also be some chopped straw or hemp in the mix to help it bind better.
It’s now a beautiful wall .. just a shame that there’s no horse in the stable.
