In Germany it's supposed to be romantic for a couple to clip a padlock onto a bridge or railing in a well known spot. There's a footbridge over the Rhine in Cologne where the local government has to cut them off every now and again because there so many they stick out sideways. They're probably a fair weight in total as well.

When you say footbridge, it is actually the main railway bridge that has a pedestrian walkway alongside.
I was there for work a few years ago (15?), and it was the first time I had seen lovers locks like that.

As you can see, totally deserted, so I went in for a swim, hence cycling kit draped over handlebars.
