I don't know what's going on with this fella, next to the old railway line over Cockfield Fell. I suspect some covert topiary has been involved. Or it could just be a coincidence. I imagine it could give someone riding there at night a bit of a scare though as it sits up on the embankment next to the track bed.
My do-it-all bike in front of a Turkey Oak in the boundary between us and our neighbours.
Apparently lots of these fast growing oaks were planted early in the 19c when England was running out of native oaks for shipbuilding. Unfortunately Turkey oaks grown in our climate have lots of faults and are unsuitable for structural use.
