I thought they were 1719 - they were moved at least twice after being put up. There lurks on the net a series of images from their restoration back when the world was in black & white

You might well be right, and I do wonder why they moved them? Oddly the gates are more impressive than the castle ... bit of a lump really?

The Red Hand at the top has something to do with one of the Lords of The Castle having blood on his hands!!!!
