I've been led to believe that the British army use the Straight European Lacing so that if a member of the SAS creeps up on you in the dead of night he can tell you're 'one of ours' by feeling your boot laces and will, therefore, not slit your throat.
Since I am not going to tote two pairs of shoes around when going to my day job so I am ok with ideas about lacing. As for distance road rides, sure velcro cycling shoes.
