We got rained on - twice.
Nor was it any of your namby-pamby southern rain, it were proper Yorkshire stair rods.
The eight of us set off from York Minster in high spirits and warm sunshine, although the muggy atmosphere should have given us an inkling of what was to come.
We were skilfully led out of York by
@busdennis and
@Slioch, who shared leading duties for the rest of the ride.
It is very flat leaving York towards Goole, but the landscape is verdant and the villages pretty, so it's not wide open flat plains boring.
Our first stop was Tesco at Goole for snacks, after which there are one or two mostly moderate hills on the way to Humber Bridge.
The lunch stop was after about 60 miles at a cafe on the south side of the bridge, but they'd stopped serving hot food by the time we got there.
We'd made good time, but didn't get away until 10.20 or so, and may have stopped a bit longer in Tesco than we needed to.
There was still nice cake and coffee at the cafe, but I think most of us wanted a hot snack.
We pressed on over the Humber Bridge to an accompaniment of thunder and lightning.
Sure enough, the heavens opened on the far side.
It rained hard for 20 or so minutes, which is enough to dampen my spirits and get me very wet, especially when largely unprepared.
The ride split about 25 miles out of York,
@ColinJ's friends Kevin and Carrie were parked in a time sensitive car park, so the sensible decision was made for them to crack on with
@busdennis and
@Kestevan.
The rest of us rode back at a more moderate pace, and were delayed by the only mechanical of the day - a puncture for
@ColinJ.
We will never know if we would have missed the next deluge had Colin not punctured, but miss it we did not.
Getting proper soaked for a second time took it out of me for a while, but my spirits lifted when the rain all but stopped just as the outskirts of York hoved into view.
An excellent ride in good company which was only partially let down by the weather.
