My own experiences in construction were that drink was a huge issue and usually my first job of the day was to go and get the carry out for the men. I got caught up in that for a year or two before construction cleaned up its act and put a stop to it. What followed was a good number of years of hard slog and the hardened drinkers were left behind. Somewhere along the line, the young team tried to break into the ranks of the seasoned operators by which time I counted myself amongst their number. Their problem was they couldn't figure out how they couldn't keep up and OD'd on things like monster and redbull in an effort to keep up. Eventually their only option was drugs like speed and coke, or scaffdust as its become known. All of a sudden we have a pandemic in construction and whilst some individuals will tinker round the edges, the issue is largely ignored, as its actually quite a stout defence for an employer should the worst ever happen.
