its an American term in that sense. I'd heard of Pinto beans which is what led me to try it, eventually, after exhausting other possibilities with -i-t- and -int- facing me

I knew of it as a type of horse. The Ford car was named after the horse

I'd put in pivot as my 2nd guess, and it was the obvious word to me with the response I got back.
