Hello all.
My girlfriend and I have won a Pashley bike on ebay which we're going to be picking up today. We've always been looking for only the best examples, and no receipts/paperwork meant no buy either.

By chance, I've found out that Pashley don't transfer warranty from owner to owner, which before was a huge factor when deciding on which Pashleys to bid on. The description clearly states warranty until May 2010, so the seller probably didn't know either.

Should I mention this to the seller? Should we expect some kind of discount? If so, how much is the warranty worth in %? Or I'm I just being an unreasonable tight git??

I think we're both tired of looking now (been nearly 2 months! most of the time because she kept changing her mind on which colour she wants!) and will settle for this one.

Thanks

To save yourself all this hassle and grief with Ebay, why don't you just go out and buy a new one?

Why would the seller give you a discount when it was up for auction and you agreed the final end price?

The bike was described with valid warranty until next year. I guess this is true to some extent, but it is only valid for the original owner.

By chance, someone from gumtree who was trying to sell me his Pashley said he could go lower (price-wise) because he found out warranty is not transferable. I've called Pashley who confirmed that it is true. The gumtree guy was well dodgy though so I didn't want anything to do with him.

So the timeline goes:

1) Didn't know about warranty
2) Won item
3) Found out about warranty

Get real here ... does it matter?

You can probably give the seller the benefit of the doubt on transfer of warranty - my guess is that he didn't realise that you couldn't do it.

If you ignore the seller's statement about warranty etc just go and collect it ... if it's obviously not right/broken/damaged then don't pay and walk away.

If not ... what's the risk of anything going wrong that would make a warranty claim worthwhile in the next 5 months? Very minimal .... and assuming the ebay price is a good deal against new price that seems worth the risk.

Make sure you get a receipt from the seller with his name and address on it ... in case the machine is stolen in which case you have recourse via the police and possibly ebay (at worst they'll strike him off ebay)

If warranty was a big must for you, I'd have looked into point 3 before entering into a contract on eBay.

I would guess the seller didn't know the warranty wasn't transferrable, even if they did it would be impossible to prove so the best you could hope for would be an agreeable cancellation, there's no reason why they should have to give you a discount.

Though unless you're planning to ride a lot in winter (it's a Pashley, I'm going with stereotypes and assuming not) you only end up with about 3 months of actual warranty period.

Unless it's an absolute wreck I wouldn't think it's going to have much (anything) go wrong in that time.

robgul, would you recommend I pay via paypal in advance for further protection instead of cash in hand?

I'm will probably just mention it, and leave it up to the seller's generosity (if any) for a discount (or not).

Thanks for the replies.

DO THIS : Go there with cash (that's real money in notes) - if you are happy with the bike, then get a detailed receipt (with frame number from the bike etc), pay and take it away ... if not walk away.

If you walk away and the seller offers a deal .... think about it (my view would be not less than 20% reduction) and see whether it's worth taking a punt on it. [But then I fettle bikes and have a pretty good idea of what I'm doing]

Even if you pay with Paypal you have no assurance of getting your money back if you don't like it ... CASH IS KING.

Have you ever bought anything on ebay before ..... ?

Given your obvious doubts/concerns about the seller and/or the bike in earlier posts then the idea of paying up-front, sight-unseen with Paypal was from way out in left-field??

Chances are you'll be fine ... if not there's always ebay to resell it!!

Out of interest, which machine have you bought? (I had a Pashley until quite recently ... didn't use it so sold it)
