Possibly a silly question but why not just take the pad out of an old pair of longs/shorts/whatever and replace the one in the Gore knicks?

Not silly at all, as I have a sewing machine. Unfortunately I don't have any spare chamois pads. Tried them out again today on a 5 mile pootle with the kids and still I was shifting around trying to get comfy. They don't seem as bad on my mountain bike, but that's probably because I don't sit in the saddle on descents whatsoever.

Think I'll have to get myself down to the LBS and try some on, I always have problems with buying cycling shorts online.

Just thought I'd pop back to report on the Tenn Outdoors shorts. I was lucky and managed to get a smaller size which arrived on Friday in time for the ride.

8/10 fit much better than 10/12 and was snug and comfy on the ride. Will deffo buy more
