I have one bike with a dropped top bar and one with a straight bar and I do prefer the dropped bar. I have short legs (some would say stumpy) and it just makes life easier. I also have short arms so it's easier to reach the brakes on a woman's bike.

I've made myself sound like some sort of deformed pygmy....I'm not, honest!!!
