It was cycling that played a huge role in liberating western women from having to wear long skirts. Thanks to the popularity of the bicycle in the 1890s, especially among women, bloomers came into vogue. Even so it took gutsy women to wear them and brave the slings and arrows of conformist society

It's a crime?

We are no so far ahead, my Great Grandmother was a keen cyclist in Edinburgh in the 1880's, she had all sorts of issues with her father who very clearly felt that cycling was not something that was done by 'ladies', she had to keep secret that she had won a race between Edinburgh, Glasgow and back

(Great Great Grandfather was a keen Alpinist, and thought it OK to take said great grandmother, as a teenager, climbing in the Alps, where she wore 'breeches' (knickerbocker trousers) which caused a furore at the time, as the local Swiss guides felt women should not be climbing mountains, and certainly not wearing trousers.)
