I see this word every where and have no idea what it means. Could someone explain its meaning to me ? Is it a verb, is it an adjective, is it an adverb, is it a noun?

It's to describe someone who has woken up or become awake to the various prejudices and x-isms of the world today. Which used to be a good thing but now it's used to describe someone who has either taken it to the extreme or uses wokism as a cloak to make them seem "rad" when they're actually not. It's not a word I'd ever use.

Yeah, basically a once-legit term coined I believe in post-slavery black America to describe being awake to bigotry and prejudices in society.

Now hijacked by the right as a perjoritive catch-all for anything allegedly left-leaning they don't like and wish to vilify.

It is unfortunately a lot like the word "Christian" or "Gentleman" in that it seems to have a lot of meanings to a lot of people.

The most consistent meaning I've come across is that it was a short, slang term roughly meaning that someone adheres to the premise of Critical Theory, in which case although I'm certainly not right wing in my politics, I'm also certainly not "woke".

Ironically this means people from one extreme automatically assume I'm in the other.
